Watch authentication program

Like many, I am here to complain about the eBay watch authentication program.  But also provide a solution.

As a watchmaker and appraiser, I am not comfortable knowing that watches are being sent to Stoll repair service in Ohio for “authentication”.  Stoll existence is mainly doing battery changes for small jewelers who do not have a staff watchmaker or they are not an authorized dealer for watch brands.  Issues with Stoll are renowned.

not everyone who buys on eBay is a novice. Many of us have been collecting or repairing for decades.  The likely event of the watch being further damaged by an underpaid novice at Stoll is very high, and while a refund would surely come, there are watches that cannot be found again once damaged.

proposed solution:

ebay should make the authentication process optional, and waive responsibility should there be any issues if a buyer chooses to not use it.  Forcing this process in everything above a price point is insane.

Re: Watch authentication program

Stoll is an authorized service center for many brands

they come highly recommended by some Rolex dealers

I guess you have a beef with them but am not sure why

Re: Watch authentication program

my beef is that I have had bad service experiences with them.  It doesn’t matter what jewelers recommended or not.

my post is simple.  eBay should give the option to have it looked at or not.  By adding this step, the risk of damage increases, as does delivery time.

for those who want it, then great.  But many do not.

Re: Watch authentication program

Posting here won't help anything.  Ebay does not read the boards.  You can make a suggestion to eBay, but I doubt they will change because one person doesn't like the authenticator.

They do give you an option, you can sell it here or somewhere else.

Since Ebay makes the rules, nothing we can do but follow them if we want to sell here.

Have a great day.

Re: Watch authentication program

Since it seems you are asking as buyer I would just stay away from any listing that has the feature.

Sadly that is all you can do.
