In May 1964 Topps released the first series of 60 B&W cards w/ blue signatures by one of the band's members. They had no info other than the card number on the back.
That set was followed shortly after with two more sets of B&W cards bringing the total to 165 cards released. In July or August Topps released a set of 55 cards with scenes from the movie A Hard Day's Night. In September, `64, they released a set of color cards with biographical info on the back. The final set of cards was another color set the "Diary Series" with details about life events, and the origins of the band, on the back. The final set released in `64 were the Plaks a color set with sayings like "I Dig The Beatles"... printed below the image. That was the last set printed until `92 or 3, when they released reprints of some of the cards from `64.
None of the sets was identified as a "series". Topps just kept producing cards with some changes as Beatlemania grew. Then to satisfy Boomer Kids nostalgia for the "old days".
In 2013 Topps released some of the originals in the Heritage News Flash Back set, commemorating stories from the past including British Invasion and the Ed Sullivan show appearance. Two additional Flash Back sets were released in 2014, 17, 19 with Beatles Cards in them.
