Hello, group - I'm not selling on eBay all the time, just occasionally, 10-15 items a year, and have a 100% positive rating. I just sold a new-in-sealed-box print cartridge. The box was tightly glued shut by the manufacturer. I wrapped the package well and sent it via priority mail. The buyer claims the item was 'not as described' because the box was open and the plastic wrapping on the cartridge itself was open, too. There's no way this could have happened unless someone in the post office opened it. I handed the well-wrapped package to the postal worker myself. The buyer would not admit to opening it and demanded his money back. He sent back the box, which indeed had been opened, but this doesn't prove that he didn't open it himself. He is a reseller of print cartridges and snapped mine up mine as soon as it was listed. I don't know what his motivation would be to open the box and then return it for refund. Perhaps he substituted another empty cartridge for the new one, or something like that - I can't prove anything. I agreed to a refund because I have no proof and didn't want bad feedback, but I know he cheated me. I didn't insure the package, and he didn't claim that the package itself had been opened, only that the item box was open. It's my word against his. What could I have done differently? There is no way to get advice on this from eBay. Very frustrating. He should be banned as a member so he can't do this to others. His rating is 99.9 - and is a "superseller" - but there were several negative ratings in the last year.

Put him on your Blocked Bidder List.
If he leaves feedback you can leave a Response. While the most effective Responses, like the most effective feedback, are calm and factual, they are not required to be positive.
Do not leave Feedback your self (if you have not already) since you can only leave positive feedback and that increases his FB which is not what you want.
If you have left FB you can add a Response as above.
Remember that your future buyers will see your Responses, so don't get emotional.
Your Responses, combined with his recent negs, will put careful buyers on notice.
Those negs may have been combined with low DSRs which will also put him on eBay's radar.
If you contact eBay, and I think a Report is in order, they will give you nothing but a polite response. This does not mean you are being brushed off. It means that they will not give vigilantes and trolls satisfaction . Your report is one side of the case. But when there are several similar instances.... a picture emerges.
Write off the cartrige as a business expense. We all run into these types from time to time. And just think, they have to live with themselves. poor souls.
And I think calling him that is an insult to the pyschotic low life community. -- Captain Maicolm Reynolds.

For the most part the buyers are great but there are some who so very dishonest. I had a similar incident happen to me but it was for a lot more money. It ended up costing me $300 as opposed to $700. The package was received, I did not get insurance. Alway, always no matter how many packages you send of value that go through fine. There is always someone who is dishonest and all you need is one. This buyer claimed he opened the package and looked at the box and took off on a trip over the holidays. When he returns, after giving me good feedback he finds the unit is broken in shipment. I had pictures of what I sent and he showed me what he claims he received. I believe he cheated me and broke the machine because he sells them. I had no proof and the package wasn't insured. Learned me a lesson. I blocked him from buying anything I ever sell again. Ebay was little help other than putting a $700 hold on my account. To them the buyer is always right. I also had a lady say I didn't mail her a pair of shoes months after I had put in a case to her for non-payment. Even though the facts were clear in this case ebay left it on my record until the time expired waiting I guess on a response from this lying buyer? I guess I may get tired one day and just stop selling on ebay alltogether but yes buyers do steal and take advantage of ebay's slanted bias towards the buyers. Sorry for you loss but learn from it as I did. Good Luck!

I am so sorry to hear this happend to you. It is truly HORRIBLE people do like that. Disgusting. Really, I'm seriously thinking of jacking up the prices on my items to INCLUDE any shipping insurances AND sig. confirmation so that scuzzy people have no room for that kind of thing.

While it is important to remember that tracking and insurance are for the benefit of the seller (although paid by the buyer, usually) in your unfortunate instance, neither would have helped.
These services only cover spurious claims of non-delivery. In your case, the package was delivered and the buyer admitted it. Postal insurance may cover damage caused by the shipper, but will not cover damage due to poor packing.
That's not a slam at your packaging, btw, it's just that the postal system (and other shippers) try to mark any packages caught in machinery, or shot by a disgruntled worker or surviving a fire*.
I believe he cheated me and broke the machine because he sells them.
My one question is why you accepted the pictures rather than demanding return of the damaged item? Hindsight is 20/20, but I wonder if the pictures were of the item you sent or of a similar already damaged item.
Otherwise, there is no good or even criminal reason for the claim. Buying an item cheap for resale at a higher price is not unusual on eBay. Buying and breaking items on purpose? Cui bono? Who benefits? His money is tied up for weeks and at the end he has enraged a potential supplier and has a broken item that needs disposal.
I often talk about self-insurance. This is the practice of adding a few pennies to each asking price to cover the occasional loss or damage, real or imaginary , of a sold item. These virtual pennies are tossed into a virtual Cookie Jar (yes! this is the Cookie Jar Insurance you hear mentioned from time to time) and when a claim comes in, you shrug, take enough pennies out of the jar to cover the actual cost (you didn't pay $700 for the item after all, you sold it for $700) and move on. Leave the crooks to karma.
*And incidentally, such 'disaster mail' is actually a sub-set of stamp collecting!

If you sell anything that could get broken in shipment, always take a picture of the exact item before you pack it, send it Priority Mail so you get free $100 insurance, and if the item is worth more than $100, buy the insurance! Be sure you calculate these costs into the price or shipping cost of your item. You can use Shipping Calculator when you set up the listing. If you offer Free Shipping, be sure you calculate these costs into the price of your item.
