Chess Collectors books

In the last 6 years I have build a small reference library. For me are reference books a smart investment. The money you spend for a book can more than make up for loosing money by mistakenly buying\selling chessmen at a wrong price, just because you aren’t knowledgeable. Here is the list of my chess collector books not included my auction catalogs: Title: Master Pieces Author: Gareth Williams ISBN: 0-670-89381-1 Title: Chessmen Author: A.E.J. Mackett-Beeson ISBN: 0 7064 0050 X Title: Book of Chessmen Author: Alex Hammond Publisher: Morrison and Gibb limited, London and Edinburgh Title: The world of Chess Author: Anthony Saidy and Norman Lessing ISBN: 0-394-48777-X Title: Collectors’ Blue Books Chess Sets Author: F. Lanier Graham Publisher: Walker and Company, New York Title: Schach (Original title The art of chess) Author: Colleen Schafroth ISBN: 3-89660-125-3 Title: Chessmen Author: Frank Greygoose ISBN: 0668047666 Title: Cultures, Chess and Art: A Collector's Odyssey across Seven Continents: Sub-Saharan Africa, Vol. 1 Author: Edwin S Munger ISBN: 0964404664 Title: Cultures, Chess & Art: Volume 2: The Americas Author: Edwin S Munger ISBN: 0964404672 What books do you have?

I do not like the relatively angular look of these sets. It is a matter of personal taste as you said.

Hi All, A book called "Chess Sets" by F. Lanier Graham is up on e-Bay. Item: 310285352843 It is a small book with some fairly standard stuff in it. The author is not a fan of the decorative figural sets and it shows in his writing. however it does have some good sections on more modern 20th sets and especially on 20th C artists like Man Ray etc. Cheers Jim

Hah! I just bought that book on an earlier auction for $4.00. I'm still waiting for its arrival so I appreciate the information you provided on the book. Now I know a little more of what to expect. Thanks. -- Edited by d-baron at 01/05/2011 3:44 PM PST

Going.... going..... gone! Well, not quite yet! A few hours yet to go! A bit of discussion, pro and con, has been given to this book - both in public and privately, and in various venues. Essentially every book has its mistakes and faults (as I continue to even find with chess sets purchased from reputable sellers who even happen to be friends!) Heck, I might even have a fault or two. or an Easter basket full! You will not likely find it at a much cheaper price - unless it shows up in a yard sale... unlikely.... more likely a used book store... and there the price is likely to be higher! The seller apparently has three available, as of the moment. And unless my eyes have crossed, the shipping costs are minimal on this large, well pictured, (physically) well constructed hardback book. (Too bad no signature, eh?) Well, without further ado... Go for it, y'all! http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=150531329641&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT John. PS: Hey, Floyd.... think you could get me an autographed copy when you are in St. Louis? (I know... I know.... seems like I may easily - and accurately? - be accused of alwasy thinking ahead and in a potentially manipulative way... No one else here or anywhere else ever does that kind of thing.... ?:| 😮 😉 )

John, If ye get off to that venue, and persuade the " Dean " to pencil you an autograph. Your " well constructed book " will truly be a grand investment . :^O I will of course be green with envy if at a later time you have a " gloat " . ;-)

Check out this book that is up on ebay:

360420162689

I've had this book for some time and I am re-reading it right now.

The approach of the author is to examine chess design from an artistic movement point of view. From the book the author is obviously a big fan of 20th C art styles.

I think some of his ideas are a little weird and one-sided, but it is a good read and a useful reference book especially for more mordern sets.

Cheers

Jim

While it can scarcely be called a book, I thought this was as good or perhaps even the best place to pose this question:

I have never seen this book before.  Has anyone else?  It appears to have been included with some kind of 'specially-designed' or 'specially-marked' style of chess board.

It has an original printing date of 1944, Games Unlimited Company was out of San Francisco, California

Pages were mis-numbered, page 18 should have been 15

And vice-versa
