Trying to redesign templates to view clearly in mobile devices

I have just started to try & redesign my auction templates to be more tiny screen & mobile device friendly.

I currently have a couple of examples up for auction and I would like some folks to view them on their phones or tablets to let me know if I'm heading in the right direction.

The old template is represented in item # 141362205001

The new design is represented in this item # 141363133565

I would be eternally grateful for any feedback in this matter!

If you are referring to the background, I like the Roma template.  I tried to use different material for the background, but the threads seems to show in the fabric which seems to take away from the item.    I use posterboard and also white printer paper for background. - Doris

Re: Trying to redesign templates to view clearly in mobile devices

Thanks!

Are you viewing these on a moblle device?

Yea, I like the ROMA background better too but what do I know anymore. Someone sent me a screenshot of one of my auctions taken on a smart phone and it was un-readable to them and me.

Agreed, poster board background for photos is best for me too. I take one photo on a white background & one on a black background. (indirect light as much as possible)

Re: Trying to redesign templates to view clearly in mobile devices

I like using HTML free designs that I found on a free Ebay Templates website and just cut the HTML Code from a note file and paste it in and I can alter some of the background but I do like some of the titles pictures and I try to entice people with good looking picture designs.

One design I use a lot is the planet earth at the top of an item.  You can see that with item 191253202387

for Video games I use the html inside of item 191253195422

Good luck.

Ilike your banner and description page with the planet. Bright colors & plenty of contrast.

On your game listing, The top of the embedded picture frame is overlapping the bottom line of your text. How did you do that? It looks like the picture was pasted over the description rather than embedded into the HTML.

That's my view on a PC.

Re: Trying to redesign templates to view clearly in mobile devices

I am not sure how that happens but I do use turbo lister to do all of my listings and I guess I have to move it down some.  I hit enter a few times to move it down.  After I put the picture on the overlay, I see the cursor down the bottom so I think the pasting sometimes goes too high because of the cursor being at the bottom edge of the tall picture.  I paste the actual picture from the website which has all of my pictures.

Instead of hitting the enter key, I think you'll have to edit the HTML tahg.

After the end of the text place in about 3 or 4 line breaks like this:

<br/><br/><br/><br/>

and then the photo URL. That should give you a little space.

Re: Trying to redesign templates to view clearly in mobile devices

I checked out all of the auctions you guys posted and they look great on both smart phone and computer. It seems all of you are using turbo lister - thats not an option for me since I'm on a mac - I'm using gargage sale.

I just finished creating a logo and revamping my auctions using a tempate I modified. I'd be interested in any feedback, comments or suggestions I could get on the logo and layout.

I'm using a white background for text (most of you are using a dark one). I also have my store departments listed - I didnt see that in any of your postings. Is there a reason why .... I know it looks small when you first pull the auction description up on a smart phone but you can enlarge that on all smart phones cant you. Also is it easier to read light text on dark backgound on a mobile device rather than visa-versa.

My layouts vary a little based on the number of pictures I'm posting - but all have the same basic layout - here are a few examples:

171401592135 - lots of pictures

321477462067 - only 2 or 3 pictures

171387812785 - just one picture

Thanks !

Chris

Re: Trying to redesign templates to view clearly in mobile devices

Hi Chris, & thanks for checking out my auctions. I don't use turbo lister and I don't sell enough to need a store. (I'm just a part time seller.

I looked at the three items you have mentioned and your template. Overall I like your listings. If you don't mind a couple of suggestions, I'll tell you what I would change. If you mind, Stop reading here>||

Your template in general is nice but you waste a lot of space on the left side of the page under the "About Us" section.

I think that If you could wrap your "Terms & Conditions", "Feedback", Photos", "Payment", "Shipping", "Returns", and so forth across the entire screen, (under the "About Us" section) it would  take up less of the length of your page. In general I get frustrated reading eBay listings that have more info about the terms, shipping, returns, etc... then they do about the item being offered for sale.

You could combine the info in the  "Shipping" section and the "Returned Shipments" sections to eliminate the latter.

The "all rights reserved/copyright" block should be at the very bottom of the page to protect everything above it.

I think it would be really slick if you could make your store logo (at the top of your page) your store's link. If you replaced the picture of the chicken & shopping basket with a "Click Here To See More Of Our Great Finds" at the top of the screen, next to your logo. Then you would get a cleaner description page below..

As  far as "171401592135 - lots of pictures" goes, I like your detailed description and great photos. I would like it if you put a <HR> tag between the last line of your description and the first line of your terms, etc. I like to see the entire item listing (photos & description) all together within a table or outlined or, even underlined to show where the actual info about the item ends and "other stuff" begins.

That could look like this in your listing:

'The cap would be easily wiped clean if the seal was removed (which I didn’t want to do - just in someone would want it intact).

Shipment will be insured and meticulously packed to protect your new treasure.

In item "321477462067 - only 2 or 3 pictures"

I think you would only need one picture of the back of the plate and maybe add a close-up that includes just the faces of the horse & the girl  in the same picture. Maybe also a close-up of the flowers too.

In this listing eBay gets the first two screenfulls of stuff. Then you take one screenful for describing the  plate you want to sell. Finally, you use 2-1/2 screenfulls of info about shipping, terms, etc. That's a total os scrolling through five & a half screens full of stuff to read & look at only one screen about the item you're selling. To me, thats a lot of reading & scrolling for a little bit of info.

"171387812785 - just one picture"

In this listing, again, too much "other stuff" to find only a half of a scrool or screen containing the item specific information.

I like your logo and page layout except for the blank space at the left (under "ABOUT US") which could be used to make your page shorter (less scrolling).

I am using a PC using "Firefox 31.0 as my browser. That's all I could I can say.

Re: Trying to redesign templates to view clearly in mobile devices

WOW !

Those were really thoughtful suggestions - greatly appreciated and taken to heart ..... I can understand that the amount of term text and scrolling on the main page might turn off some potential buyers so I've spent the majority of today revamping again. I'm limited by certain restrictions within the template but managed to incorporate most of your suggestions.

  • Wasted space on the left had side corrected
  • terms of sale greatly condensed and moved to the shipping and payments tap so they are not on the main auction page
  • copyright statement moved to the bottom
  • separating specific auction copy from rest w/ line
  • I'm unable to make the image at the top "clickable" because of template limitations - but I do have a text link for "Visit Store" / "Sale Items" & "Add me to you Favorites" up there - and a clickable image at the bottom of the auction page. Some auctions that have lengthy text also have a clickable image in the middle. I'm trying my best to drive traffic to my store.

As for the comments on the pictures - I'll keep that in mind for future listings .... and also as items get relisted

You can checkout the changes on any of my auctions and let me know what you think.

..... but here's a funny .... the first auction # I had listed on the prior post (the vintage german liquir bottle) - I got an email from ebay this morning that the item was pulled for a listing infraction on achohol. I know you cant sell booze .... but the bottle was EMPTY!  It said empty it in the auction title, the condition details - and about five other places in the copy. Its a white porcelin bottle so you cant see thru it and its shape makes it impossible to clearly picture the inside. Apparatly thats what they need .... a picture of the inside to prove it's empty .... saying it 10 times is not enough .... LOL !

Thanks !!

Chris

You now have what I call a very CLEAN listing! I like them so much better than the previous versions.

Now your listings look like magazine ads, they are great! Good Luck!
