(when) should I open an INR case?

Hello,

I bought an item on 4/20/21 and paid right away via PP. EDD 5/4/21.

On 5/1 I sent an email to the seller asking for a tracking # (I knew I wasn't home that day and wanted to make arrangements). No reply.

On 5/5 I sent another email informing the seller that the item hadn't arrived, asked for tracking again. Same day I got a very short to-the-point answer: sorry for the delay. I will check with USPS. (No hello, thank you, signature, whatsoever.) No mentioning of tracking #. I know the seller is not required to release it to me or even obtain one in the first place, but it would have been helpful, especially since the item was not marked as shipped either. This is anxiety-inducing for buyers. 😆

On 5/8 I asked if there were any news?

On 5/10 I received following message: It was returned back to sender. But I will ship out another one asap

This is kinda weird. I checked my address, it's correct within ebay and PP info.

I also use USPS Informed Delivery and usually know in advance if there's a package coming. "Return to sender" strikes me as odd.

I do want the item, I bought it and paid for it.

At what point should I open an INR case? Since this is a new seller (2020, 253 FB, 96.3%), I don't want to kick their shins, but I also don't want to be played and be out of $130 because I missed my deadline. They're located in the US, so I assume it's a drop-shipper (14 days delivery from the get-go)? Correct me if I'm wrong.

Also, shipping asap doesn't mean anything. I most likely won't see a tracking # again and kinda feel strung along.

Any input is appreciated, thank you!

Re: (when) should I open an INR case?

I think seller's rating should only be judged by last month (maybe few), 96.3%  could be an indication of bumpy beginning, happened to the best of us. The amount of feedback does matter, if it's power seller (tens, hundreds of thousands) this could be quite normal.

Regardless, if seller does not mark it as shipped within shipping time (usually a couple or few business days) that is a first concern, not having (or sharing) tracking number (when it should be available as the service assumes it) is the second strike.

The fact that it was returned maybe due to some newest shipping policies (like pandemic related) that seller might not have adjusted to yet, so it might take a couple of takes (I myself have a few packages from China that were returned to seller a few times before finally leaving the country, some of them have "note: security return").

Some suspicious sellers are often detected by eBay itself (could be with others help) and in that case eBay usually sends a warning and advises to not to pay (if it hasn't been done yet), so on those it is better to open INR right away.

So if seller is cooperating (communicating, explaining the situation) then you may want to be lenient but if you don't feel that the seller cares then, well, make him. Business is an obligation and here on eBay we want to keep the bar high, getting the order in time is part of the deal too.

@2ndhandjunky

You have 30 day to the minute after the last estimated delivery date to open an INR on eBay. I would open it on day 29, or sooner.

File today, the seller is trying to get you to let the INR clock run out

Thank you, I was thinking the same.

I kinda have to ignore the "I will ship asap" email. Great if the item arrives before day 29. If not, tough nuggets.

Re: (when) should I open an INR case?

1. Since you can open an INR case as early as just a few days past the last estimated delivery date, it's hard to understand why you'd want to wait much longer than that.  You have 30 days past that date to do that.

2. BTW, 96.3% isn't exactly a stellar seller rating.  Can't speak for others, but I try to limit my purchases to sellers with 98% or better.

3. It doesn't need to be "anxiety-inducing".  ALL buyers have the Money Back Guarantee.  It's the responsibility of the buyer to read it, understand it and understand when/how to use it appropriately.

Re: (when) should I open an INR case?

You can one day past the last given delivery date. If tracking shows it's on it's way you can wait a few days to allow for delays. If it's not in transit, file as soon as you can.   You have 30 days from the last expected delivery date to file. However, never wait that long. To be safe file no later that 25 days and only if tracking shows movement.

I shoot for 99+, especially when there are multiple sellers selling the same product.

Just so you know...96.3 is a terrible fb percentage. Did you actually read the negative feedbacks?

No harm in opening a case sooner.

Re: (when) should I open an INR case?

@2ndhandjunky While I can understand your desire to be kind to a new seller, you also have a responsibility for mitigating your damages. A 96.3% ratio is awful, especially for a new seller. The types of responses they've infrequently given you screams danger. Before you know it your time limit for an INR will run out then you will be out your money and item. I hope your sense of self preservation kicks in shortly. Best of luck to you....

RE:  On 5/10 I received following message: It was returned back to sender. But I will ship out another one asap.

From your post you appear to be a super nice buyer, patient and willing to work with the seller to get your item.  However, as for me, I think this seller is stringing you along with no reason why the package was returned back to sender.   In fact,  this seller did not say the package would be resent to you, but that he/she would send another one ASAP.   Do not believe this!

You have received very sound advice on how to proceed in opening a case.  Because you are a nice buyer, once the case is opened, do not close this case until money is actually refunded to your account.

Re: (when) should I open an INR case?

I did. Not my first rodeo. Even though 96.9 might not be the greatest, it's not the worst either.  Seller had a few deliveries past EDD (some people give negative ON the latest estimated date), not happy with color, didn't read the description, item broke after one week of use, etc...Nothing that really read red flag for me regarding integrity.

Also, because of the Ebay Protection clause I'm not too worried,  just not happy.

Thank you for the input.

Re: (when) should I open an INR case?

I did actually read the reviews. Not my first rodeo. 😉

There were no red flags regarding seller's integrity, not for me anyway. Lots of positive about communication and shipping speed, though?! 🤔🤷🏻‍♀️

I will, however, start an INR case before the 30 days are up.

Thank you for your input!
