I mailed out a media mail item on Apr 4. Put it in the blue mail box. The status still shows up as "Tracking number provided." Doesn't show up as having been received by post office.
What is my recourse if it never gets updated? Can I file a claim even though it doesn't show up as being in their possession?
It's a cheap item so not that big of a deal. Just curious about what the process is.

Hmmm I have never filed a claim for a package where it never showed any scan, so I am not sure if they would honor or not. I would think that there would be no recourse if you didn't have proof you dropped off. I would sign up for email updates on USPS website for the tracking number, that seems to shake things loose for me. If nothing shows up by Monday, I would file a claim on the USPS website (if you sent priority mail).
I always get my packages scanned in. I had to switch post offices for awhile because my post office is refusing to do receipt scans to minimize contact with people. I did drop 4-5 packages in their drop bin when they first changed and all of them were scanned in the next morning when they got to the distribution center.

This happens to me on a somewhat regular basis - packages not showing any tracking scans until much later in the journey (destination sorting facility or buyer's local PO).
This was a media mail package so unless you purchased separate insurance it will not qualify for a lost or damaged claim, not even if a tracking scan shows up today but the package gets lost en route to its final destination.
Fortunately you said this was a cheap item, so if worse comes to worst and the buyer files a non-receipt claim then the loss when you refund them will be minimal. If the package arrives after you refund the buyer they might even be willing to re-pay.
Just give it some time as tracking scans should eventually show up.
I glanced at a few of your sold items ... $4 DVD set and free shipping, you're only making $1 at most and that doesn't include packing materials or anything other than eBay and PayPal fees plus MM ship cost. $8 XXL raincoat with free ship, you had to lose money on that. Raise your prices, buddy!

Lots and lots of sellers are reporting that Media Mail is now basically stuck in the USPS system (not moving for 2-3 weeks).
Sellers should not be using Media Mail until the coronavirus lock-downs clear up.
It will eventually get to your customer, but it might take a long, long time ... I would let your customer know that their item shipped, but you've discovered that economy shipping (Media Mail) is being significantly delayed by the USPS due to labor shortages arising from the coronavirus outbreak, and that their patience is appreciated. But, if they file an INR claim, then you'll have to refund their money.

I also get every one of our packages scanned at the PO, and I stand in line and wait so that every one has at least an initial scan. We never have the problem described, and we mail some media mail packages.
