shipping

I would just like to p[ass this info on to everyone who uses the usps for shipping. I recently shipped a vintage lamp from texas to colorado. I packaged it securely with plastic packaging. It arrived to the buyer with a  7 inch tear and hole in the bottom  of the box. the globe of the lamp was broke in several pieces.  I had put $50.00 insurance on it. I filed a claim with the post office. They  denied my claim saying the damage was not their fault.  So i did 3 appeals but all three appeals were denied with them adding reasons like I did not package securely and could not provide the worth of the item., So here is my suggestion to everyone who ships with the usps. Take a picture of the inside of the package with the breakable item wrapped inside before you ship it and another few pictures of the outside of the box before shipping. Just to have for extra evidinse.  It just upset me that they said the gash in the bottom of the box was not their fault. so just putting the warning out there.

@bic969

I think your suggestion is extra effort that I doubt will make a difference.

I've never heard of USPS insurance covering glass or ceramics ... these claims are always denied for "fragile nature if item" (DMM 609 4.3.l) or "improper packaging" (DMM 609 4.3.o).    In your case, the item is fragile ... if one wants to put in extra effort, then your best protection is to double-box the item with sufficient cushioning.

Here is the USPS policy:   https://pe.usps.com/text/dmm300/609.htm#ep1097244

Re: shipping

Unfortunately, what you say is true.  The USPS will gladly take your money for adding insurance to the package though. UPS is no better. They will fight a claim, tooth and nail, even if item is packaged for a round trip to the moon. Real time packaging photos, rarely help. Shipping companies are the judge, jury,  and executioner. So wrong.

Re: shipping

An item like that should be double-boxed for shipping.

Yeah they don't care, claim denied, any extra effort you put into making sure will just result in more time wasted and your being more disappointed.  Stop sending these people your money, self-insure and put the money in your own pockets.
