shipping

Just made my first sale, a coin. When listing the item I mistakenly identified that I was shipping a package instead of an envelope and now my eBay shipping label will cost $3.12 instead of $.55 if it was a letter. I'd rather pay $.55. Any ideas? Thanks

@mame1218

If you don't ship with tracking, the buyer can say they didn't get it and get their money back.

Have a great day.

Re: shipping

@mame1218  - you'll need to pony up the $3.12 because shipping cost cannot be changed retroactively.  Since almost everyone has done things like this (I've forgotten to change priority to first class, for instance) you're not alone. Just be certain you check the shipping on your listings going forward.

Re: shipping

Only the package comes with tracking.

Never ever send a coin in a envelope the sorting machines love to separate envelope and coin.

Re: shipping

For a coin valued at $16.50 do you recommend shipping with tracking or simple first class mail? Thanks

Re: shipping

1st class package includes tracking, so that $3.12 will include tracking

Re: shipping

Yeah, don't be cheap and ship a coin in an envelope where the sorting machines can rip the paper. Use a decent padded mailer and send with tracking.

Re: shipping

I wouldn't ship anything without tracking!  You are just asking for trouble.  I didn't get it, says the buyer.  With no proof of delivery, the buyer is right...even if they are lying.  Always protect yourself.

You are not allowed to mail rigid objects as a letter for $0.55.  If it does not exceed a 1/4"   in thickness (and weighs less than 3.5 ozs) you can mail it as a rigid envelope which is like 1st class + a non-machinable surcharge

This is a business decision you will have to make!  Others have laid out the risks involved, so now you get to decide what makes the most sense to you.  Do you feel lucky? or are you a risk adverse person?

There is no 'one right answer,' just what is right for you.

Shipping is one of the highest costs that a seller faces and there are many options.  Successful sellers get to the PhD level on shipping as a way to reduce costs and to limit risks.  It took me a while to learn the ins & outs and I am still learning, but hey, if I can do it you can too!

Good luck!
