shipping books

I'm new to selling.  I have a personal collection of vintage and antique books I would like to list and if they sell and it's not too much hassle maybe I will expand as a regular book seller.  I'm trying to absorb and understand about media mail, pirate mail and shipping through ebay. So many options my head is spinning.  Is there a shipping quote that will be a flat rate weather I ship across the street or across the country?

Re: shipping books

You just can NOT make stuff like that up. That is it in a nutshell, how will you ever win with a policy that finds fault using the theory of Six- degrees-of- separation?

Thank you for your post. That is probably the clearest explanation of the problem plaguing booksellers ( I can say " plague", correct?) here.

If I could plus-10 rate this post, I would.

Re: shipping books

Then you'll love this one:

Several years ago, I listed a men's adventure magazine, which contained an article about illegal gambling on two male roosters who fight each other (the common term rhymes with "sock writing," okay?).

My listing was taken down -- the reason being that the article was considered to be offensively pornographic.

When I contacted our ever-so-unhelpful "help desk" in the Philippines, it turns out that the reps were unfamiliar with the street slang for two roosters who fight each other (i. e., rhymes with "sock writing"); and, instead, understood the term to mean male individuals battling each other with their. . .er. . .you know. . ..

I tried to explain to them that they were wa-y-y off track; but I gave up.

I simply changed the definition of the article -- and my listing was accepted.

Another reason why an off-shore "help" desk is unhelpful -- ignorance of common American slang terms.

And I don't even want to think about sock puppets. . ..

Re: shipping books

Really good point, I'm amazed you were able to get the information about what the problem was. I listed a piece of silver bullion in the shape of a bullet once. Was told that bullets were not allowed, listing was pulled down. Called and the rep told me that anything with bullet in the title was going to get dinged.

I spent a few hours reporting hundreds of non bullet listings with that word in the title. The next morning got an email saying "upon review" my item was OK to relist.

Sometimes I think it just depends on who looks at your listing, it's someone's interpretation of their policies.
