I run an IT support company.
I've been buying parts on Ebay for 10 years, with no problems.
10 days a go I bought a new battery for a Macbook Pro retina laptop.I made sure the buyer allowed return of the item,in this case within 14 days.
I opened the cardboard box, and inside was the battery, wrapped in an anti-static bag. At no time did I open this anti-static bag. I never even put my fingers on it. So of course this means I never took the battery out of this bag.
When I opened my client's Macbook, I quickly realised the job was going to be too difficult to do (I'd never replaced a Retina model battery before).
So I sent it back via Ebay's postal service, telling the truth that I'd changed my mind.
The seller then lied to Ebay, saying I'd opened the anti-static bag (totally untrue), and unfortunately Ebay took his side and refused the refund.Sadly, I hadn't taken a photo of the packaging before I returned it, thinking there would be no problem. I assume he must have opened it himself, and pretended it was me who'd opened it.
I've been messaging the seller via Ebay, and have told him he's clearly lied about me opening the static bag.
I obviously asked for the battery back, as I'd paid for it.At first he said he would return it, but I never received it.
He's now saying he's spoken to Ebay ,and they say he doesn't have to return it!
I simply do not and cannot believe this is true.He can't keep my money and my goods!
His last message says he's "discarded" the battery.
Ebay don't seem interested as they've closed the case, and they're a pain to deal with anyway.
I hate being conned like this, and the guy is basically laughing at me as he's located 150 miles from me and knows I won't sue for a £70 deal.
But it's the principle that matters here.
I feel like reporting it to the police, to Action Fraud.
By the way, I tried to give the seller negative feedback, but it was removed by Ebay!

This story seems odd to me, and I suspect there is some information that is missing ... unless things in the UK are just vastly different than here in the US. The one thing that you haven't done is to communicate with eBay customer service. I would give them a call to try to understand what they are basing their decision upon ... if you have followed all of the return procedures correctly, then it is still possible that you can get your money refunded.
