problems with a USPS claim - broken item, priority shipping

Hello!

I am fairly new to selling on EBay.  I just had a first experience with an item breaking during shipment. I used priority mail and packed it carefully in bubble wrap, foam, and newspaper! The buyer had the item shipped to someone else as a birthday present. I felt so bad that the item broke! The buyer asked to not have to return the item, but sent a good picture of what happened. I refunded his money. When I am trying to make a claim with the Post Office, they are asking to inspect the package physically. I did send them the picture of the broken item, but I do not have the physical package and don't want to bother the recipient any further.  Do I just write the whole thing off, or is there a way to get my money back from the Post Office? They obviously bashed the package! Anyone with experience?

Well with out the package and item the PO does not have to pay.

Sorry you learned this the hard way.

Oh and having the item returned to you also would be against postal regulations as it was reshipped.

The buyer could kept it and returned it to the PO at your request, but they do not have to do that.

USPS does not like to pay out....
