misguided package

I rec'ed a package from an ebay seller, I didn't order it, didn't pay for it,and don't want it.  Just want to get it to the correct buyer.  I have an ebay order #, but what am I supposed to do with this item, I think it is pretty valuable.  Ebay is no help.

How was the packaged addressed? Your name and address?

You can check on eBay who was the seller and communicate with them. You wont get info on who is the true receiver. If communicating with seller is no help, I'm sure the buyer will be submitting his own item not received claim. As for you, just wait a bit, and see if seller respond, otherwise, item is yours to keep.

I forgot to add that sometimes foreign sellers have packages returned to random US address when they do not want to pay for international shipping. Typically this is being done on low value items, not sure if this is the case here.

If the item is in your name: you own it.

As for finding out who the seller was: order number will not help; need item number to find them:

Good luck with this.

Hmm
Must add:

If you have purchased off of eBay:

hang on to this: as you might have got an item instead of what you purchased and will have to return it for a refund: as item not as described case...

Check completed listings for this item, and maybe you can find the seller that way.

Use the advance search just behind the search window on the right. When that window opens, type what item is and do a search of sold items. Maybe something will pop up.

What about the return address? All packages shipped in the US have to have one. Even if it does not have the senders eBay username, the city/state would help narrow down the search.

Actually that’s incorrect. If your local car dealer delivers a brand new corvette to your house by mistake and the paperwork has your name on it do you think you get to keep it? Think again.

The bank makes a mistake and deposits a million dollars into your bank account, is it yours?

the court recognizes that mistakes happen. Telling someone to keep something that was not supposed to go to them is legally called unjust enrichment.

The correct thing to do is to attempt to contact the seller and wait to see if they answer. If they do not on a reasonable time frame it’s reasonable to dispose of the item as one sees fit.

What is the item? How did you find the order number? That's typically not on the Shipping label.

It might be possible for eBay Customer Service to identify the sender via the tracking number, if the seller uploaded it, though I don't know if they would share that info with you. If it was a USPS package, your post office can identify the sender on their in-house intranet system using the tracking number, even if the sender did not put the return address on the package (though they're supposed to insist that a return address be applied).

Although I assume you opened it (since you know what the item is), if you can neatly re-seal it so that the outer wrapping is undisturbed, you can take it back to the PO and ask them to stamp it Return To Sender. You mention that you did not pay for it so you are apparently not out any money.

One other thought: is this a seller that you know, or were expecting an order from, and you're just saying that they have sent you the wrong item?

Maybe it was a gift sent to you on purpose from a friend or family member.  I get lots of orders paid for by one name and shipped to another.  The buyer may assume their name as the gift giver appears somewhere on the order or packing slip but it does not.  The ship to addressee and their address are on the packing slip.

Is there an item number on the shipping label? It's tiny and sideways on the right. Sellers can have this added to the label (I do) but it's a checkbox and many sellers probably do not, but... Just a thought.

Are you waiting for a package? If so, the seller might have mixed them up. Look at what that seller has sold. Might give you a clue.   You can give it back to the shipper as refused.  It's not supposed to be opened if you do that.  But if re closed neatly.......    That would get it back to the shipper.
