This exactly. They would be considered how to books, in other words, instructional. There are pattern books that do not qualify, as they are only patterns, no instructional reading material.

The likelihood is that someone who knows pattern books are not qualified, levied the charge and does not take the time to split hairs. If you shipping pattern books via media mail, this is the risk you take.
It would not be the first situation like this.

I have sold hundreds of craft books on Ebay and Etsy. Small thin books I put in a plastic bag, sleeve with cardboard and ship in a shipping envelope. Larger books I do the same thing, but ship in a box. And on each item shipped, on the left hand lower corner, I write the dimensions, underneath that the weight, and underneath that the class of mail: either media or GA. If the buyer has paid for priority, I will slap a few priority labels on it.
I have never had an adjustment in the las 15 years or so. Before that, when I first started selling and learning the rules, I shipped so old comic books media mail, and they were returned t me as being not eligible for media mail.

Drawing attention to the rate at which someone is shipping an item may not be the best choice.
Media Mail is subject to inspection.
Drawing attention to it could increase the odds of it being "opened for inspection".
So yes, it helps to write "media mail" on the package if you would like it opened for inspection.

All of my books qualify. Have a picture of each package to incase of an APV adjustment.
