It was supposed to go out today but of course the car won't start - I won't make it to the post office on time.
If I mail it out tomorrow it'll be one day past the return window. Will eBay still honor the return?

If it doesn't arrive in a certain amount of time, the seller can alert eBay and get the case closed in their favor.

Unfortunately, I've found that eBay allows a very short amount of time to open a case and get a refund. In this way eBay makes it relatively easy for a seller to have his cake and eat it too, or to keep a return and the money paid for it. If you've exceeded this extremely limited timeframe, I do believe PayPal gives much more time to open a case. As far as I know, you can do one or the other, but not both. Once you choose one, you are stuck with that one. I have not done a case through PayPal lately, but the last time I did, it was way past the eBay timeframe. PayPal seems to take longer than eBay, but when you are down to one choice, you go with the one option that you still have of course. Tracking is a big deal either way. If you can show that you returned an item by providing tracking, it is very helpful.

I misunderstood if you actually already opened a case and did not abide by the terms of that case. If you've opened a case and failed to follow the instructions, as the other poster said, the seller can have the case closed. You know, this does not agree with my skepticism of the goodness of man, but some sellers are actually honest. You know how I know? Because I'm honest and have dealt with a lot of honest people here on eBay. I wouldn't cheat a customer out of their money, and there are other honest people in the world. I've been late to return a watch band in fact. I had actually already closed the return request myself because I ran out of time and it seemed inevitable. But I still politely talked to the seller, and he in fact gave me my refund, even though he didn't have to. Since then, I have bought from him several more times. He is actually my sole supplier of watch bands. I will go out of my way to find his listings and buy from him. The original return was not a quality issue or anything. I sold the watch that the band went on, and had absolutely no use for the band. His honesty and effort to do the right thing impressed me so much that I became a loyal repeat customer. People like this are some of the best people you can ever deal with, and they are here, and if you buy a lot like I have, you will meet quite a few of them. So talk to the seller is my point. Don't make demands or be rude because you have no leg to stand on if you opened a return request but didn't follow eBay's instructions.

Its not ebay who honors returns, its the seller. You were required to have it shipped back by today and the return can close at anytime now because the item hasn't been shipped. It is not uncommon for sellers to have the return closed the following day if there is either no tracking number uploaded OR the tracking number shows no activity. So if the return closes before your item is scanned in by the PO, once it is delivered to the seller your best course of action if the seller doesn't refund you, would be to file a dispute with paypal and upload the tracking number.
