Why is there no tracking scan for USPS packages that are with the USPS?

I have several packages that I dropped off at UPS for pick up by the USPS. I KNOW that the USPS has them in possession. Yet, tracking hasn't been updated, so it looks like I only printed the shipping label but didn't drop it off with USPS.

Some packages have been with USPS for about TWO WEEKS without a scan. One package that I dropped off on December 13th was finally scanned and updated just TODAY, on Dec 23.

What is going on? Why doesn't USPS scan the package as soon as they get possession of it? How do I get them to scan the package?

Some people have commented that some places aren’t doing scans, so they can get the packages delivered quicker.

Some packages are taking 2-4 weeks and some are 3-5 days, depending on which hubs they are going through.

Everyone has options. Just be sure the best option is right for you.

unfortunately, the only way to guarantee a scan right now is to wait in line at the post office (the "USPS is in possession" scan--currently there are no assurances about any scans after that...some packages are going from that initial one to delivery scan, with no tracking action in between).

What is going on is record breaking volume at the USPS.  Stay-at-home buying due to COVID-19 and the added high volume of Holiday shipping.  Plus may sorting hubs are wiped out with a large number of employees off due to contracting COVID-19 or imposed quarantines due to being in the proximity of those with COVID-19.  So the whole system is jammed tight.

So some USPS sites are not doing acceptance scans as a way to move packages along faster.  Some sites have limited over time so the workers can either sort into outgoing bins or hold mail and scan them delaying their progress.

The only way to be sure that USPS scans a package as received is to stand in line and hand the package to a clerk and ask for a receipt.  There use to be 24-hour USPS windows in some of the major cities or at airports, so that might be a possibility after business hours or on the weekends.

I guess if you have a good carrier, and you use the right shipping, then you could request a package pick-up and your carrier is suppose to scan it when they snatch it from the pick-up location.

But tossing a package in a bin is a bad strategy these days.  Shoot it was a bad idea before.  I had that happen to me several times and it got to the place where I had to change to getting scans in person.  A bit of a pain, but all worked into the plan.

I just had someone ask me the same question.  I had the package picked up with others.  The packages before and after the sale of their item has at least a scan shown....their package....nothing at all.

Right now I think the best bet if you have time is to bring them to the PO and watch them scan each item and ask for a receipt because the receipt will show the zip code for each package.  And it will at least shown an initial scan for shipping proof online.
