Why are sellers allowed to initiate a label to ship and then wait days to ship?

I am having this happen all the time now. Excuses on why they don’t get to the post office. Does it look like they shipped once they initiate a label? Is there a way I can notify Ebay that they actually haven’t shipped?

@salegall

Always wondered about that. Could be the item was sourced from somewhere when it gets ordered so they buy the postage and wait for the item to arrive and then ship.

glyph01 had one possible explanation.

You also need to check the sellers stated handling time. Do not assume that they ship immediately. Some sellers actually state (although somewhat hidden) “items ship in XX days” and it can be several to over 10 and more.

Maybe they print the label just to get it “in the works”.

But I have seen times when the FIRST scan that an item gets by the post office is when it actually gets delivered. From the day I ship right up until the day it gets delivered (more or less on time) it does appear that the item had not been shipped because the tracking simple says “waiting for item”.

Not saying that is always the case, but I know from my own experience that it is the case sometimes.

So not only does the post office not scan a package, they also sometimes misdirect it. I mailed a package to Canada and it wound up in The Cook Islands. Cook Islands marked it return to sender, it got as far as New Zealand then disappeared.

I mailed a package to Germany. On some given day the tracking showed it was in a city in California. THE NEXT DAY the German post office delivered to my buyer in Germany. Clearly the tracking information was wrong.

There isn't a good reason for a seller to do something like this on purpose.  Ebay holds sellers to the handling times the sellers state on their listings.  If we don't ship within those stated handling times we get a ding on our accounts.  It doesn't take a whole lot of them to hurt a sellers standing on Ebay.

So there isn't a benefit to any seller doing this.  And unfortunately I can't offer a reason why you have ran into this problem either.  Sorry.

1.  It is not  uncommon that sellers will buy a shipping  label  say on  late Friday night and not get the  package in the  hands of the  carrier on teh following Monday  or Tues (if Monday is a holiday).

2.  As long as there is a tracking number uploaded to the sales file, eBay will see when the package received the  acceptance scan - of course, sometimes the carrier will screw  this up but not often - normal around Christmas time.  Hey  I haven't met a  person or a company that has been 100% spot on correct 100%  of them time unless it was a young person selling  from their lemonade stand.  I  also  am  a firm believer  that all those computer  glitches we  hear about are  caused  by humans.  But folks  like to say the   computer  did it because they  can't talk back (yet).  Computers  operate on a  very simple  principle - called  GIGO - garbage in = garbage out.  People provide the  inputs.

Well..right now I have one item that was to be received on March 1st and I prodded her to ship and another that made it on the due date that I also had to remind to ship. Both admitted to preparing labels and waiting days with various excuses for why they didn’t make it to the post office.

and of course the obligatory “thank you for your patience”

You have to look at handling time. Sellers can list from same day to I believe up to 10 days. Mine is 3 days. My packages tend to weigh 4 to 5 oz. I know what they are going to weigh almost 99% of time, so I will print up the order details and the label for the package, pull the item and box it up and get it ready to ship.

Then....when time permits, I'll make a special trip to the post office. I used to sell 4 or 5 items a day. Now, it is one sale every few days and on some occasions, I may get a rush of two or three. I think all you are seeing is sellers prepping to ship and making trips to the post office when it makes sense.

Most of my packages actually do go out the same day. But on occasions, I just don't have time to make a special trip with a load that won't fit in the mailbox.

Just because a label is printed, ebay does not consider it shipped until the first scan (received at the post office) so there is nothing you need to do to notify eBay - they already know. It is considered in a "pre-shipment" state until that first scan.

For most sellers, the quicker you have your item, the quicker they can consider the funds you paid as theirs. So, most sellers do want you to get your stuff quickly.

Cheers

It can actually be up to 30 days

It still makes no sense.  They aren't doing themselves or the health of their selling accounts any favors.  I'm sorry I have no answers for you as I'm sure this is very frustrating for you as a buyer.  But know this practice would be far more uncommon than a common action by sellers.  Most understand the negative impact such a practice on a regular basis can be on their accounts.

While it may not be uncommon for sellers to print shipping labels on a Friday, I think it is FAR LESS common for them to hold the shipment until Monday or Tuesday.

If this is something that I find the need to do, for whatever reason I may have, I will create the label on Friday but with Monday's date on the label, absolutely not Friday's.

Obviously there are some sellers that do as the OP has described, but that does not make it common practice.

"As long as there is a tracking number uploaded to the sales file, eBay will see when the package received the  acceptance scan..."  This is NOT true.  If a seller prints the label on Friday and does not get the package to the carrier until Monday, the acceptance scan happens on Monday.  It does NOT happen at the time a seller creates a label.

Thank you for your explanation and for what you feel is a rarity among sellers. Much appreciated.

I'm confident it is as there is nothing good that can come from that practice.  With Ebay or our customers / buyers.  Most of us work very hard to make sure we do the best possible job for our buyers.  As a smart seller wants their customers happy as a happy customer may become a return customer.  And we all LOVE US a return customer.

lol,

Well, if you wanna get technical, if they paid with credit card it can be up to 180 days before the money is yours.....lol... I mean simply most non scammer buyers will let you know within 3 days they want to return the item. Scammer buyers will use it or break it until day 29 and then file a return. Or send you the a broken one back, or take all the good compenents they needed out of your item and send it back...all that kind of stuff...lol

Ummm, it is true TYVM.

The acceptance scan can ONLY occur when USPS Accepts the package. If it is printed on Friday, but not scanned by USPS until Monday The acceptance scan is Monday 🙂
