When you just need a few boxes - ?

If my items don’t fit into the free USPS boxes or other ones I have in bulk, what are the best options for finding a couple single boxes to fit my items?

Ie Let’s say for item one my box size needed is 16x16x12 and I don’t want to buy 25 of them in bulk - I just want one box and likely won’t need that size again.

Is there somewhere I can go to just buy a single shipping box like that?

Most office supply stores have some boxes.   Also, if there is a UPS shipping store nearby, they usually have boxes.   Expect to pay around $5 for a single box though.

Also, you could ask around at some retail stores in your area to get a used box that they received and are going to discard.

I sometimes reuse clean boxes that I get from the drug store, grocery store, $ store. Most are more than happy to let them go.

I like to snag tray style boxes (like canned veggie, or soup can display) from Wally on occasion. I use them to store small items on my shelves. Wally is reluctant to give out complete boxes, because there are so many identifying marks on the boxes.

I picked up some large boxes at a local car dealership to cut down to the size I needed.

Boxes from the liquor store are sturdy boxes for shipping, but work is involved to got things covered up so that USPS will accept them.

One liquor store stopped giving out boxes after someone used them to load up their trash for illegal dumping. Info on the boxes traced back to the store.

Liquor stores always seem to have boxes laying around that they're more than happy to get rid of.

Good suggestions here. Also check out Lowe’s and Home Depot. They often have moving boxes about that size and they’re around $2 - 3. You can check the inventory of your closest store online.

Hey everyone thanks for the replies.

I’ll have to check out my local Staples and a few office supply stores and see what they have.

@grafskates

If you are going to use either liquor store boxes or anything with a hazardous label best to remove/cover up those any previous labels. Same goes for any old addresses. Rules and regulations are covered at the USPS site. For me, I've always found the dollar stores the best place to get a good assortment for free.

Re: When you just need a few boxes - ?

I have almost never, ever paid for plain brown boxes.  It's too easy to get them free from stores.

The one time I made an exception I had some items that were the same on two dimensions as a storage place wardrobe box, and I could cut the box in half and get two from one.  Since they were selling for several hundred dollars each I figured I could absorb the $16 the box cost.

I occasionally buy boxes at Wal Mart, Lowes, Home Depot or even U-Haul when a specific size is required.  Sometimes I go to Dollar General when they are unpacking goods and score free ones.  Good luck

Re: When you just need a few boxes - ?

I have never purchased  a box.  My brother saves packing material, air pockets, and boxes for me.  These are things that his employer used to throw in the dumpster.  Now they throw them in a trash bag and give them to me.  Reduce, reuse, recycle!

A few of my neighbors save their boxes and poly mailers for me too.  Yes, some are amazon, but I turn the poly  mailers inside out and tape over amazon and add eBay stickers to the boxes.   I get large envelopes at school sales, auctions, and garage sales.  I reuse every box from everything I order from eBay.  Why pay retail?

Re: When you just need a few boxes - ?

Try saving Amazon, Wallyworld and other boxes and packing materials you receive (if any). Also, there is in one corner of every box a flap that is glued to the next side. That is all that holds the box together. Carefully peel that joint apart. Then the box can be "reversed" on itself. Tape the inside bottom seams first when you fold it back together inside out and you have a clean, unmarked or upc code covered box.

Ask neighbors if they’ve got any Amazon boxes hanging around. Everyone’s got those!
