I recently purchased this jacket:
It it turned out to be a counterfeit and I was able to get confirmation from Arcteryx. The seller initially tried to explain away the difference in quality by claiming that this was an older model and said I had to pay the shipping back if I wished to return. After showing him confirmation from manufacturer, he finally sent me a return label outside the eBay system via email.
I returned the package and it was shown as delivered. When I tried to claim the refund through eBay, seller opened a case saying that the return was delivered to a different address. eBay is currently reviewing the case and has not ruled it in anyone’s favor yet.
I was wondering what is this guy’s deal. I was planning to let it go and not leave negative feedback if he had issued a refund without stirring up trouble. Now that he’a trying to scam me out of a jacket on top of my money, not to mention the fact that I noticed 10 other buyers have bought the same jacket from him without realizing that they received fakes, I feel like I should do humanity some good by getting him banned. Did he really expect to win this dispute?

The only case a seller can open is an unpaid item dispute.
He furnished the label. If it was delivered to the first three numbers in the zip code he is supposed to refund by 2 business days after tracking shows delivered. If he doesn't refund you only have 10 days to ask eBay to force the seller to refund. So if you don't get the refund in a few days you need to contact eBay and let them know you used the return label the seller provided and tracking shows DELIVERED.

As far as eBay knows, you bought your own label, and misaddressed it: eBay can only verify your return delivery against the return address shown on the return details page.
So if you didn't object and knowingly used a return label which was not addressed to that return address, instead of calling to escalate because the seller did not provide a label with a matching address, then eBay likely cannot help force you a refund.

I initiated the return via eBay but the seller sent the label via email before accepting the return via eBay. By then I had already shipped the item out.
On top of all that, would the fact that he sold counterfeit not help my case at all?

I'm afraid you did not use the Money Back Guarantee in a way that ebay could protect you. Always follow eBay's protocol (not the seller's promises) when it comes to returns and resolution cases. Going outside the system forfeits your protection.

Now to get him banned.
