My recent listings/sales are showing estimated delivery dates of handling time + 1-2 days transit time. This is for USPS GROUND shipping, from California to the East Coast. They are using Express Mail transit estimates for Ground shipments? Is this a new thing?

Not new at all. eBay posts overly-optimistic estimated delivery dates all the time.
Not only that, eBay CHANGES the estimated delivery date. I have a 15-day handling time. When a buyer pays, the order page shows a date around two weeks from the payment date. HOWEVER, when the item gets it's first carrier scan, eBay CHANGES the estimated delivery date to an overly-optimistic date that regular shipping can't possible meet, thereby opening up the seller to an INR from a predatory buyer. You see complaints about this all the time on these boards.
It's one of the reasons I ship mostly Priority Mail. When I print a label on eBay, I check the box to include a message in the "Shipped" email the seller receives, usually like this.
" Your item will ship on or about xx-xx-xx via USPS Priority Mail. The USPS expected delivery date may differ from the eBay estimated delivery date."

the very best advice I can give you is to completely ignore those dates
all sellers get the same stupid ETA so everyone is getting lied to
the ETA is good for nothing guestimate and its like flipping a coin
the ETA is in the same realm as feedback.its just not worth talking about
those numbers are just numbers meant to confuse folks who get confused by numbers.
its a real crock..............just like those stupid DSR stars
please do not get worked up over an ETA........its just not worth it

Actually eb just updates delivery dates to what is shown at USPS.com. I used to get mad at eb for the unrealilstic delivery dates, but now I can see that USPS is mostly to blame. Their estimated dates are all over the place and inaccurate, to say the least. Had a package delivered today to a buyer in Pennsylvania that was 10 days past the estimated delivery date.
