What happens after return case expires?

I have two return requests that are open (I have not accepted either yet) and they are both well past the date I was supposed to accept them by. They were both opened for completely wrong reasons and it doesnt seem like the buyer or myself are going to escalate the case. From what I understand after a month the return requests will expire. Will I get a defect on my account for not responding or will they just close and that will be the end of it? Thanks!

I don't know, that's never happened before that I know of.  Is there a button available like Cancel?

It's possible that will be the end of it, until the buyer wises up and files the same claim via PayPal or his/her credit card issuer.

No ... you will not get a defect if it just closes on its own.  eBay only considers it a defect if eBay is asked to step in because it is unresolved.  Here is the language from the eBay policy (the language in blue at the end is how you would get a defect):

For the eBay Money Back Guarantee, when a buyer initially starts a return because the item didn't match the listing description or reports that they didn't receive an item, the transaction issue is called a "request." If the buyer and seller can't resolve the problem, and the buyer or seller asks us to step in and help with the transaction, the request then becomes a "case." For PayPal Purchase Protection, the transaction issue is a "case" throughout the process.

The number of cases closed without resolution is an important indicator of how well a seller may be meeting buyer expectations on eBay, and is a measure of overall seller performance.

A case closed without seller resolution is any case the seller is unable to resolve with the buyer prior to the buyer asking us to step in and help with a request, or escalating a case to PayPal for review, and eBay or PayPal determines the seller is responsible.

Re: What happens after return case expires?

What if Buyer was offered a solution and still decides to keep it, but does not cancel return? The return date has expired for 4 days but its still opened. I reported the buyer for abusing return rules, but there is no response from ebay. Will I get a defect?
