USPS scans when dropping off package but not at pickup. Why?

Living in a rural area which requires about 90 minutes a day to take packages to the post office. I have to wonder why within a couple of minutes I get notification of a package arrival at my home, but they don't offer this for a collection of packaging? Thus making it a necessity to drive and drop 9 to 11 hours a week depending on traffic and lines just to get official receipt of packages sent.

Very odd

Apologies if this is the wrong place to discuss. I don't know where i am much less where to go. Ha!

USPS is in transition on a lot of processes at this time and procedures will vary from state to state, city to city. Scan processes will vary.

Try extending your handling time a couple of days so that the packages picked up at your residence will have an appropriate amount of time to be scanned at a distribution center.

Sometimes this seems realistic:

Re: USPS scans when dropping off package but not at pickup. Why?

I asked the clerk this afternoon. Very small town. She didn't know either. And thanks Lake, I have it set for three days because everything happens in these hills from time to time. Weather, washouts, trees down, mechanical issues, lilac, forsythia, red bud, tulips all blooming on the same day, to name a few unsurprising ones. Practically need 4wd to get in and out when things are excellent. Beauty has it's toll gates. I guess these notices "mail it now to be rated better" induce anti human demands of if you are not a robot you are a failure. Natural intelligence has life of many types of excellence. Ha!

Re: USPS scans when dropping off package but not at pickup. Why?

Employees are on a time clock.

Employees who deliver packages  'double park' on the streets and I hate that.

There are usually no parking open spaces where I live.

Imagine how much time would be wasted doing this for everyone?

And I want my package as soon as possible...not delayed by tracking of picking up packages.

Using 'Shipping 3-5 business days' of packages should work out for anyone not getting a scan immediately.

And some people leave snacks or water out for delivery services...wouldn't that be nice for those who live in rural areas?...Maybe get to know the person who picks up packages and talk to them. A friendly smile goes a long way.

Re: USPS scans when dropping off package but not at pickup. Why?

It takes a second to scan something, maybe. And it would only be the packages with a scan ready label. Small price to pay to save what several millions plus people spending many hours a week, plus fuel and such to do what could be done and a person does 98 percent of at their box already. If the robot doesn't downgrade us for three day settings I'd like to know because making the post run most excellently twice a week would be liberating in so many ways.

Your local mail carrier should pick up packages at your home. All of ours do, but we had to tell them to, and train them to Not Forget and show up everyday.
If they are USPS fed employee, it's in their best interest to scan upon pickup.
If they are contracted, they see no benefit to scanning upon pickup.
The latter can be bribed though.

No, it takes our local mail carrier 5 to 10 minutes here.  But, she's a USPS Federal Employee and has learned (the hard way) that she should scan our packages upon pickup.
She now whines a lil bit on a slow day and tells up to "get it in gear" and sell more stuff. LOL

Hate to hear of your troubles. My regular carrier scans on pickup and delivery. But he's the best. 😊

Re: USPS scans when dropping off package but not at pickup. Why?

I'm facing this same situation.

I extended my handling time from 3 to 5 days. That seems to be sufficient to have tracking uploaded within my handling time. Otherwise I would get a late shipping defect because the po doesn't scan for several days.

@kingsriverboy

eBay does not penalize you for three day handling time (I assume that is what you are asking).

The point, rather, is that eBay does not reward you for three day handling time.

I am fortunate (?) to live a stone's throw from two post offices and offer same day shipping.   And eBay does in fact reward that level of customer service.

I wonder if there are others in your general area who sell on eBay and who make the same 90 minute drive as you... if so, maybe you could all work together and take turns making the drive?

(Yeah, I know, I am implying a level of trust and cooperation amongst Homo sapiens that is almost unheard of these days.)

Re: USPS scans when dropping off package but not at pickup. Why?

I had 3 mailpieces for USPC pickup on Tuesday 5/27/25 after Memorial day.  Carrier picked them up and placed them in his truck before noon.  Since then, ONE shows as DELIVERED, the other 2 awaiting pickup.  I made calls to USPS 800-275-8777 for the past 2 days and have 2 service requests in for those days.  USPS has no clue when and where the 3 packages will get scanned at their SOURTING center.  Had the carrier taken the time to scan the actual packages at pickup time is now too much to ask for.  USPS closed both cases just because the local Arlington branch in Poughkeepsie returned the 2 service requests.  WELL, they closed it so I need to call to reopen the case and I will until I see movement on scanning.  IS THIS CONSUMER FRAUD?

The USPS district Rep's in My neck of woods  ,have  been recommending all  packages should  be handed over  to employees at the PO for the acceptance scan  . All  carriers are required by USPS regulations to scan packages on pickup .
