Whenever my regular carrier is off ,her substitute would fail to show up to pick up packages which I scheduled online,I never leave my packages outside as they could be stolen,I expect them to knock or ring the door bell.
I have been doing this since 2002.
Now I just get off the phone with our local post office, they missed the pickup from last Saturday and I want to make sure they dont miss it today.
The lady who answered the phone is a carrier, she said that if these packages are not outside by the door, then the carrier would just assume there is nothing to pickup?
I tried to explain to her that a new feature has been added to online pickup on www.usps.com where we can choose an option called knock or ring door bell.
But she refused t o listen, saying she is a carrier herself and if no packages are left outside, they assume there is no pickup and then she hanged up on me.
I am surprised how they can make up their own rule,as carriers they should know better that packages left outside could be stolen, what can I do to make them change their mind?
I have complained about them to WWW.USPS.COM,but nothing has changed, who else can I complain to?
or is it one of these sayings-you get what you pay for?
USPS is the cheapest way to ship ! so bear with it!

You need to complain to the local post master.

I agree with Kaelykat on this one. CALL your post master.

As a carrier I have dealt with this issue. Frankly just about every time I have been directed to ring the bell to pick-up packages they either haven't been ready or no one comes to the door.
I do have several regular pick-ups and with these most have places they leave their packages. That can be a tote on a porch, a jumbo mailbox, one even put up a decorative outhouse (4 foot tall) in a flower bed at the end of their driveway. My uncle who lives in Cleveland uses a old army trunk that doubles for a table between the two chairs on his front porch for incoming and outgoing packages.

I too run into issues when substitutes are on my carrier's route. She can't get a regular substitute for the route because the other carriers openly complain about how difficult the route is to complete. Fortunately, she contacts me a couple of days in advance when she will not be working.
My packages go inside a large plastic gardening shed next to my side door when rain or snow is in the forcast. Otherwise, I use a recycle bin tipped over, to place packages under in nice weather and have a note taped to the bottom. My carrier has that info in her route notes for subs. Sometimes it works sometimes not, but I am usually home when the mail is delivered so I keep an eye out for the mail truck.

LOL, sounds like my route. My subs not working today as she tote up her Jeep on the route Sat. (I'm off with a pinched nerve in my lower back, taking a couple days off per chiropractor advice).
My route is 97 miles long. Only around 10 miles other than the short stretches of state route road is paved. I joke that I travel a extra 5 miles or so each day around potholes. I've had my gas tank fall off and my motor even fall when the bolts in the motor mounts sheer off. Carriers and subs move off this route ASAP as soon as they can.
