I sold a book on April 1st, purchased a shipping label and sent it out promptly the next day. Tracking still hasn't been updated since then and it only says "Tracking number provided." Is this a glitch, or should I assume it got lost?

Was it scanned in when you dropped it off?

Can't say for sure, but I'm there a few times a week and have never had a problem. With the enhanced precautions lately, I just hand them my packages and leave.

I wouldn't worry, rare but known to happen, usually gets a scan sometime latter on.

Did you take your package to the PO inside counter and didn't get an acceptance scan or did you drop it in a curbside blue box after the time of last pick-up?

I think you should assume neither. The most likely assumption is that it just didn't get a scan, and it is sitting in a bin somewhere.
And, if you sent it media mail, it might be sitting around for a while. Another seller reported that their media mail is not moving at all.

Or maybe something went wrong with the label and it is illegible. Drop of water in the wrong place on inkjet label - only has to mess with one line and one digit to make the tracking unscannable and numbers illegible.
Label taped over a wrinkle or box flap/fold, obscuring lines and numbers. Barcode not on the same side of box/envelope as address portion of label. Label not attached well and actually fell off.
Lots of possibilities. In my opinion far too soon to worry about the package actually being lost. And yet another good reason not to babysit tracking numbers - no need for the added stress.

UPDATE: Strangely, it departed from a different post office the next town over and is now at the Regional Distribution Center. Thanks for all the replies.

Did you notice? It's an automatic event, departed that PO exactly 1 hour and 15 minutes before.
