USPS Shipping Priority Insured Not Paying for Broken Items

Seriously considering boycotting the USPS at this point.  Their new policy before paying out on a broken item claim requires the BUYER  to take the packaging (box, bubble wrap, peanuts etc)  to the post office  and have it inspected by a postal employee.   This is a ridiculous expectation for a buyer who has already received an item that was damaged in shipping.   If the post office isn't going to insure their packages properly I'm going to UPS or FedEx.

If you notice not a single package or piece of mail is sitting on a silk pillow. Nope they are crammed in wherever they can fit. Then they will be transported around a mailroute with twists turns ups and downs to rival any amusement park ride. This is why you need to pack well.

To the people saying people do not pack their items well, sometimes it's irrelevant how well you pack. This one needed kevlar reinforcement apparently.

Re: USPS Shipping Priority Insured Not Paying for Broken Items

Absolutely!  I learned the most by doing the 'toss package down the stairs" test.  Fished some glass jars out of the recycle bin and packaged until I had no breakage.

That taught me about double walling boxes, plenty of bubble wrap, when to use peanuts and when to avoid.  Shoot even when I ship a 'like new' book I often do a box in a padded envelope trick.  Much safer than the discounters who toss paperbacks in poly mailers.

It's all the cost of doing business and providing good customer support!

Those pictures are disgraceful😋 😱 😂!

I expect MY packages should be enclosed in a 💭 at all times, but might take a small refund if all you can manage is a silk pillow! 😂  I mean, what if one of those boxes on the top shelf were to fall off? Who is going to catch it?

Re: USPS Shipping Priority Insured Not Paying for Broken Items

Yep. Sometimes it's irrelevant how you pack. Occasional losses will occur. It's the nature of the beast.  The seller is responsible for getting the item to the customer safely. Period.

So, the smart seller plans for those things by adjusting prices a bit in order to cover anticipated losses. This fact is even more applicable to sellers who deal in a lot of fragile items.

If occasional boo-boos are anticipated and planned for, then that alone should take most of the drama out of the whole process. Sure, USPS has their packing recommendations. Those are probably fine when things are mostly normal. As we all know, things haven't been any where near normal for quite some time now, and it's not going to get better any time soon.

It's disappointing (for both buyer and seller) when it happens, and that's when a good seller has to put the emotional reactions aside and offer stellar CS. Most buyers understand that "stuff" happens once in awhile and as long as they are treated with respect and taken care of, many would even buy again from the same seller. An excellent CS response from a well-seasoned seller can even turn a shipping disaster into a repeat customer. I've done it.

I'm not going to put my original investment and possible profits at risk in order to appease an often pushy,  cheapskate buyer who wants me to skimp on shipping costs. It's not happening.

There's no reason for making excuses and lashing out at those who are trying to help.

This ^^^

We have a seller right now who was just shocked something arrived broken because it was packed so well.  It was thin fragile glass wrapped in paper with a heavier base that had been detached also in the same box.  Insurance is never going to pay that.  The fragile glass should have been in a separate box inside the shipping box and wrapped in more than paper in that box.

Re: USPS Shipping Priority Insured Not Paying for Broken Items

The best solution is to package your items better to be honest. But I share your distain for USPS and I wont ship anything using USPS that is worth more than $20 and weighs less than 16oz. It has done alot for my mental well being to not have to deal with their incompetence.

Nope, just the facts that if a package has voids in it, it will get crushed. It is only cardboard after all.

Think of it this way. A chicken weighing around 50 times as much as an egg can sit on it without breaking for 3 weeks. If you took a pin and made a small hole in the egg and blew out the contents, then put it back in the nest it wouldn't even survive a minute when the hen came back.

The reflection is me LOL my only internet picture I think, I am so not photogenic.

Re: USPS Shipping Priority Insured Not Paying for Broken Items

I've had some pieces like that, also I have had things that had such fragile parts that if I didn't have the original packaging I wouldn't even try to ship them. Like these I have in my shop. I have them in a locking case not because of value but because I'm sure if they are handled they will Not sure what happened here but eBay wont let me edit. It was supposed to be this picture.

Re: USPS Shipping Priority Insured Not Paying for Broken Items

OP is going down a road that will lead to more anger and frustration.  Best to tell him that the solution is to better pack his items.  To create an echo chamber for him is ultimately uncaring.

The reflection is me LOL my only internet picture I think, I am so not photogenic.

I think what you people at the USPS do is yoeman's work!  My carriers are always happy, helpful and pleasant.  I see the load y'all operate under and think you are doing a great job!

Glad you got a few days off to heal and heal the jeep too!  Keep up good work!  Appreciate the insider information!

Re: USPS Shipping Priority Insured Not Paying for Broken Items

Hmmm....  The old saying:  "Been there, done that!"  I drove mail as a rural carrier for 33  1/2 years before getting out.  I saw lots of damaged mail and packages over the years.  For a long time I tied my spare tire on the roof to leave room for packages inside, and many, many times tied large packages on the roof due to the volume of mail and packages.  And I drove full size Jeep Grand Wagoneers for about 30 of those years.  Glad I am now retired.

Re: USPS Shipping Priority Insured Not Paying for Broken Items

Ah ha!  That is what the OP is doing wrong! 😂 😱 😎

They should have a BIG roof rack and be able to double the size of the load they are taking out each day!  None of this, "I had to leave a pile at the PO because it wouldn't fit" stuff! 🤣 😁 😜

I mean why aren't they taking their own money 💰 🤑 and going out and renting a U-Haul trailer to pull behind those Jeeps, with the overflow packages?    🤔😳  Everyone KNOWS you can pull a trailer with a Jeep!

****sarcasm warning! ********
