UPS additional handling charges, may of figured it out

I keep getting these $20 "additional handling" charges and they are always on what amounts to a piece of flat sheet metal of various sizes, I always just sandwich it between two pieces of cardboard and then just tape it solid with shipping tape in 2 different directions, on ebay I would get the message that there was a adjustment but it would never tell me what was wrong, just additional handling I owed another $20 or so which was more than the original shipping.

Then I started shipping my UPS on pirate ship and sure enough I got a additional handling charge, same deal except this time the message said "Addl Handling-Non-corrugated" I have been taping packages like this for years with no problem, I think what has happened is that there is some new automation that thinks it is not cardboard because it is taped solid.

I sent in a appeal which you can do on pirate ship and it was approved like 2 days later, I will probably never ship UPS through ebay again, I think I might just ship everything pirateship.

What they mean when they say "non corrugated" is it isn't a standard RSC corrugated box or other approved shipping container designed for packaging.  Typically when using a non standard "box", you want to get pre approval that the package will function throughout the entire shipping process.  For many here on eBay  shipping a variety of items, that is not possible.

This is why a box with a box maker's certificate (BMC) on bottom is important when filing claims.  Not all style of boxes require a BMC, but standard boxes like RSC's, who's flaps meet in the center and use tape or glue, do require a BMC to prove the box is "ship" worthy.
