Up to a year or so ago, I had my Personal UPS account tied to eBay shipping and the fees were billed to UPS account when labels were purchased thru eBay. At this point, I am buying UPS labels thru eBay and the fees are paid for thru eBay managed payments.

Is tying a personal UPS account to eBay still a thing? If so, what were/are the advantages or disadvantages of this setup?

You can no longer link your UPS (or FedEx) account to ebay to get the ebay discounts. However, you can link your personal UPS account to your PayPal account, which will give you the PayPal discounts when you use your UPS account on the UPS website. These rates are close to ebay's and don't get hit with surprise charges or have ebay in the middle if a problem arises.

Better discounts, even sometimes lower than ebay, is by using a free PirateShip account. Although you use their website, the quotes are accurate and resolution of any problems is straightforward. PirateShip will also import from ebay and upload tracking for you. There is also all USPS services at discount including Cubic Rate.

I purchased a UPS label to mail a package recently and went through Ebay, but the money for the postage evidently was not taken out. Ebay sent me the whole price just minus seller fees and did not take out for the postage. Now I get a message saying I owe postage. I don't dispute this, but why wasn't it taken out then and not weeks later? Is there something I should have done that I didn't do OR did Ebay just make a mistake? The message was accusatory like I did something on purpose.

If my customers request UPS, then I use the UPS website using my own UPS account to print a label. That way, I don't have managed payment as a middle person in case there is a package dispute/charge for dimensions or weight. A quick copy & paste of the tracking number in the order details & the customer & ebay are happy for the tracking information.

UPS (and FedEx) is not charged until the package is delivered, then it shows on ebay's next UPS billing cycle, and finally invoiced on your next ebay bill.
