Seller received the item back on August 4th, I paid for shipping, and has now messaged me they have tried issuing a refund for several days but keeps getting an error and they say they can't get through to customer support as well.
I don't want to put a mark on their account but I am unsure at this point what can be done without contacting ebay.
Is there any possible thing I can do without messing with their ebay account?

They probably removed the funds from their PayPal account and can't refund you. They used to issue echecks for refunds, not sure if that is the case anymore.
There's really nothing you can do but escalate the case for the refund. You did your part and returned the item, they have a deadline to refund.

Let your seller know that they need to ask someone else to Friends & Family more cash into their PayPal balance to cover the entire original payment -- item cost, shipping, AND sales tax. So if your payment was $56.78, the refund will fail with a balance of that amount less tax, for example.
If your seller disagrees, doesn't understand, or won't take the suggestion, click Ask eBay to step in, since it's been over 2 business days since your return was delivered, and eBay will refund you, then bill the seller.
