The item I purchased is being returned to the sender. How can I ask the sender to resend it?

I haven't picked up my item from the post office in time and after a month its being delivered to the sender. I think it's not my fault, or at least not completely. If you are interested why, please read my pathetic story below. If you work for Ebay you maybe interested too.

Spoiler
I clearly remember that when I was paying for my order I selected the pickup point from a number of options presented on a map. Maybe it's some kind of a false memory but I was expecting to pick up my parcel there, not in my post office. The expected delivery date was March, 3. On February, 28 the shipment status was updated with "Parcel arrived at destination depot", but the item was still being listed "on its way". So I figured out (wrongly) that that vaguely described "destination depot" is some facility somewhere in my country, as it usually is. Turns out, the parcel was already in my post office, waiting for me to pick up. If only there was some indication on the site or in the app that the item is ready to pick up, if only Ebay could at least show zip codes on the site and in the app, that would not have happened. I used another service to track my parcel, and all the zip codes were there, but it was too late.

I don't want my money back from the seller since it won't cover the shipment cost. I'd rather have my item instead and willing to pay for the shipment again. Should I just ask the seller directly and pay him or does Ebay provide with some method to deal with this situation?

Send a message to the seller.  Ask he seller how much it would cost to reship, and then send that amount via PayPal.
