Tariffs

Hello,

I purchased this item on August 18th.

It is PS1 Tours also Spyro X Sparks tons Sony Sony PlayStation 1 Japan Import.

It is from Tokyo, Japan.

I paid $56.65 for it.

And it says it is being shipped using usps and it also says Due to US policies, import fees for this item will need to be paid to customs or the shipping carrier on delivery.

You can find out more information about tariff
rates based on the item description from the
Harmonized Tariff Schedule. Additional duty

rates may apply based on the item's type and
"Country/Region of Manufacture" (country of
origin), which may be found in the item
description.

Multiply the tariff percentage by your total
order amount shown at checkout.

Shipping providers (e.g., UPS) or US Customs
will charge processing fees ranging from

$10-$30.

It's being shipped using usps.

24% x (US$56.65) = $14

So, how much do I owe when it is delivered?

You purchased this item on Aug 18, so where is it now, according to the tracking?

Has it entered the US yet? Has it cleared customs?

I found the listing, and although the picture isn't very clear, it looks as though the game case is marked "Made in Japan".

If that is the case, if the seller filled out the customs form with the correct country of origin (Japan), and if it clears customs before tomorrow Aug 29, 2025, then it should qualify for the de minimis exemption (which is ending tomorrow) and if so, you should not owe anything for it.

If it clears customs on Aug 29 or after, then you may have to pay duty/tariff, which you pay to the shipping carrier before it is delivered, they will let you know how much and how to pay. However, if clears customs on Aug 29 or after, then it was supposed to be shipped with the duty/tariff prepaid. The shipping carrier would have paid it on your behalf.

Delivery people only can handle deliveries I would assume.

No to mention Amazon...

No. For packages that reach US CBP (customs office) on or after Aug 29, 2025, the duty/tariff has to be prepaid when it gets there. Shipping carriers are collecting it from the senders when they buy the shipping label. So USPS, FedEx, UPS etc. will not be collecting from buyers before delivery any more.

I am not sure if the tariff rate  (ad valorem) or if the flat rate of $80 per item  is being used for Japan. Even by going by the rate you may have other fees added on. Japan tariff is %15, which would be $8.50.

From what i see it will likely be the flat fee of $80. Not sure if other fees are tacked on

You won't know for sure what it will be till it shows up to be delivered with the duty form.

@yakkowarnermovies1989 purchased the game 10 days ago, so it depends on when the package reaches the US CBP customs office.

There's a pretty good chance that it has already been shipped, and may already have reached the customs office or been cleared. If so, then there should not be any duty/tariff because the game was made in Japan, and would be eligible for de minimis until the end of business today.

If not, then which method is used to calculate the duty/tariff depends on the shipping carrier, not where it is being sent from. The listing showed "Standard Shipping from outside US". That could be an international postal service, or it might be a non-postal carrier.

OK ... in that case, we will have to see.

Keep an eye on the tracking and let us know when it reaches the US.

What shipping service is being used in Japan?

@12345jamesstamps   Thats why some carriers are halting shipments and why some may be using a temporary flat fee per item.

I see some suggestions that the carrier may seek payment before delivery is attempted. With a phone call or email of the amount owed.

It seems like the change was basically stated by the US... with little to no guidance on how it is to be implemented with individual companies left to figure how to implement it and if they can handle implementing it.

Re: Tariffs

So if it was a video game from Japan I would still have to pay tariff. Right?

Re: Tariffs

@lacemaker3  I found out he seller used Japan Post which uses USPS... (despite their listing saying fed-ex/DHL for international orders.) So 10 days ago would be before Japan post shutdown shipment to US.

Japan Post tracking says it arrived at outward exchange office. Which i believe is customs. USPS tracking says it cleared this office at the same time. Who knows what really happened. US shipments were halted on the 27th... hopefully this ensured prior shipments were able to clear. It was shipped on the 25th.

Not sure if it was marked as a gift.... which being under $100 would make it go through even today with no tariff.

Hopefully it made it throught

From what I understand Japan post/USPS will have to pay duties before they can take the package to be delivered.... what I dont understand is when/how this is collected from the buyer... I see somethings saying buyer will get a phone call/email from carrier while still at customs...others saying it can be collected upon delivery....

Re: Tariffs

You mean you talked to the seller Egg prince?

I'm still very confused.

Does it mean that I will have to pay tariff or something once they come?

Re: Tariffs

The provided text is a statement of U.S. customs policy changes taking effect on August 29, 2025, eliminating the tariff exemption for low-value packages and introducing duties on items, even those worth less than $800, including a flat fee and duty based on the item's value, which USPS will collect. For a $60 item from Japan, you would likely pay an $80-$200 flat fee plus a percentage of the item's value, resulting in approximately $89 in total costs collected by USPS at delivery.
