Stuck in Cincinnati

I had a great transaction, shared some local memories with the buyer, but now he says the item has not arrived yet. Shipped June 23, today is August 1. Item tracking shows it arrived in Cincinnati on June 30, where it has been recumbent since.

When I go to file a claim on the Post office website, it says:

Sorry, this package isn't eligible for a claim since it wasn't purchased with insurance.

The Post Office denies responsibility for their own delivery service?

A new Covid-era  modus operandi in American business? A company sells someone something if it doesn't work, or it's broke, just tell your customer, "Hey you didn't buy insurance, so no, you don't get a refund."

Don't you just love it?

A company that needs to have you purchase insurance in the first place, is a head scratcher.

But, that's the way they've all operated for ions.

@epsilon_publishing

I'm guessing you shipped using Media Mail.

Unless you shipped Priority or purchased insurance, there's nothing USPS will do.

Have a great day.

They don't take responsibility for losing a package or delivering it to the wrong house unless you insure it.

You might try contacting your own post office directly--phone or visit in person--to see if they'll assist you in getting that package moving along, since it appears it is "recumbent" (and I use that word quite wrongly) in Cincinnati. Sometimes that will shake a package loose, when it's your post office running interference for you. Worth a shot, anyway.

@epsilon_publishing you don't need to file an insurance claim, you ship with USPS? need to file 1. "Where's My Package" Inquire and 2. "Missing Mail" inquire...both done via USPS website. They are two different search inquires, both will send you a confirmation of the inquire to your normal email, both will reply with results and follow ups.

The Seller is responsible for purchasing insurance.  I ship everything insured.  Don't know if it always helps, but it gives me a sense of security.  UPS includes $100 insurance.

Does that $100 insurance cover Media Mail? The books were valued at about $150.

Thanks, now I remember, I did that before, too. I think they are concealing those options on usps.com. Those pages have been relocated somewhere out the back door, hidden in the forest of the regular website pages

Yes, Tony sent them an e-mail.

The package is "resting" in WKRP-land. I should look up the definition of a word before using it, "recumbent" seemed to suggest something in a supine position. ("supine"???) Hopefully, face (mailing label) upward. Should I remain supine in the face of terrible wrongdoing...?

But my Expectations are not Great, Ms Havisham

I think it's just a matter of time

Okay, I'll get back to proofreading my book...

...   Last I knew it was very simple to start a missing mail process.

Seems like it was right there in a drop down window if you hover on "help" at usps dot com

EXACTLY as I expected.

After filling out the form with dates, addresses, etc., uploading the images, agreeing to all the conditions, I submit the form and OF COURSE, there is a Post Office glitch, or purposeful programming error, which prevents acceptance of the help form:

"Error: 500 - Error UNK404 - Internal failure. Request support for Error UNK404."

To call them, and waste more hours? What clerk is going to resolve that issue? "internal unknown error" ? LMFAO!

"Request Support"? From who? How?

I am 100% NOT disappointed. I expected NOTHING  and I got NOTHING. I just lose my money and the Post Office does not even communicate. YEAH, you're welcome!

To add insult to injury, even IF their system, which seems to be programmed to auto-reject complaints, does, somehow, ACCEPT a complaint, it is stored for only SEVEN Days. In other words, your request NOT that they accept responsibility for the missing package, but that they simply LOOK for it,  that request for help is deleted from their database within the week.

It's as it has been on the site for quite a longtime now. Why they arranged the site like that idk.. but to file a "Where's My Package" inquire, you have to go "Help" on the top left of the main page, then select "FAQ" from the dropdown, then select "Contact US" in the row of 3 options across the screen by selecting "Find Out How", then select "Contact Us" on the next page options, enter tracking number on the following page and click track...then proceed with package details.
It's the same for Missing Mail, select from the Help drop down.

In any case, mail is rarely lost, in most cases what happens is a package gets stuck on a semi and just sits there. Every package I have ever sent that didn't arrive to buyer or arrived late was found and delivered.

Nothing new; if you ship via USPS without insurance, and the package is lost/damaged, it's your loss. When was it not that way?

read the thread: you sold some thing for 150 and sent it the cheapest way you could" you deserve to get hit with this in my opinion.

Media mail has always been a risk to ship with. Since the mess up with USPS it has been a problem. If you have not had such prior you have been very lucky....

No advice I can give: other than  stop using media mail until they get the USPS fixed if ever...

Hope they do not open an item not received case so you are forced to refund them..
