Shipping to Hawaii

I sold an item on EBay.

the listing shipping included “The United States”.

However, the buyer is in Hawaii and shipping will cost at least 50% more than I charged for shipping.

Does United States mean continental US?

can I ask the buyer to pay more for shipping?

thanks

Re: Shipping to Hawaii

You shouldn't ask more $ from buyer, you listed it, it is on you to know the areas being covered and that you charge enough. How do you think buyer will react if you ask for more $? That could've been the main selling point on his decision.

A simple google search will yield that Continental United States: The 49 States (including Alaska, excluding Hawaii) located on the continent of North America, and the District of Columbia.

The choice is yours, take the hit for the extra $, ask buyer and see if they accept, or cancel using problem with buyers address and then relist accordingly after adjusting the listing.

Re: Shipping to Hawaii

Just wanted to mention that Hawaii IS the 50th state of the United States.

And how much more is the shipping to HI than, for instance, California, or the State of Washington?

Re: Shipping to Hawaii

I would never ask a buyer for more money for shipping. Take the hit. And learn from the mistakes. Being on eBay for a while it is a learning experience.

Re: Shipping to Hawaii

If you use Flat Rate shipping to the USA, pick the state furthest from you, with the highest population. (FL, CA,NY).

Since parcel rates are bases on distance as well as dimensions and weight, that will be the highest cost for the lower 48.

HI and Alaska (and PR) might be higher, but their low populations means rare sales. The times a nearby buyer pays long distance rates will mean that overall you are not losing on shipping.

If you use Calculated Shipping, you give the weight and dimensions of your parcel, and when the buyer enters his zipcode he sees the correct cost for the service.

No, it does not.

Re: Shipping to Hawaii

You are based in Seattle, so shipping to Hawaii via USPS will cost the same as shipping to me here on the east coast.  Your listing for a mug charged a flat rate of $10 for Priority Mail; if that's not enough to ship to HI, then it's not enough to ship to the east coast, either.  This is why most sellers use calculated shipping: to avoid overcharging near buyers and/or undercharging farther ones.

No, you cannot ask the buyer to pay for your mistake.

Re: Shipping to Hawaii

The United States means just that - the United States, which  includes all 50 states, all territories and protectorates (Puerto Rico, Guam, etc.)  and APO/FPO/DPO.

To limit to the lower 48 you have to set up your shipping preferences to block those areas.

The easier you are to offend the easier you are to control.

Re: Shipping to Hawaii

Online Priority label would likely be an additional $2.66.

If a "padded flat rate envelope" (label purchased online) was used it would be $1.45 less than the amount the buyer paid.

Re: Shipping to Hawaii

Shipping to Hawaii costs me the same as it does to ship to California.
