Shipping problem

The shipping agent on their own without conversation, approval or any contact with myself, changed the method of shipping and now wants an additional and incredible amount of  $1300.00 . Original cost was $250.00. E-BAY has removed all funds from my sales and says that they want to  be paid additional money. They are going to tap into my personal bank account to collect. E-BAY has a partner ship with the shipper so I am probably dead in the water. Any suggestions on how to handle this situation? Thank you.

My daughter and teen age son carried it in and it sure was not 257 pounds.

Here is what happened.

  1. When shipping, the billable weight is the maximum of the scale weight and the dimensional weight.
  2. A package that measures 29x38x27 has a dimensional weight of 179 pounds (you measure the dimensional weight by multiplying the three dimensions together and dividing by 166).
  3. There is an oversize surcharge of $1,250 if the length + girth exceeds 165 inches (basically, something this big has to be shipped via freight ... and UPS will penalize the @#$@#$ out of anyone who tries to ship freight through their system).  The size of your package is 150 = (38 + 2*29 + 2*27).   Not oversize.
  4. However, at that size of 29x38x27, you are still going to get a LARGE PACKAGE surcharge since the length+girth exceeds 130 inches.  This surcharge will be on the order of $160-235 depending on where it is being shipped to.
  5. But let's get to the big charge you are facing.  When UPS measured the package (maybe automated measuring), the new measurements mean that the dimensional weight is 32x43x31/166 = 257 pounds ... also, the length+girth is 169 = (43 + 2*32 + 2*31), and this is the reason you are being assessed a $1,250 surcharge.

I wrote all that just to explain what is happening.

All is not lost.  You are going to need to appeal the sizing that UPS is using through eBay, since eBay is the account holder.  It is not a weight issue ... it is a dimensions issue.  Make sure you submit evidence of the dimensions that you got at the UPS store.

The surcharges that I'm referring to can be found on page 130 of the UPS Service Guide:

I am assuming this was either a UPS or FedEx label and you got hit with the surcharge for exceeding their package size limits.

Can you tell us what were the outer package dimensions you entered when purchasing the label, and what is the carrier claiming the actual dimensions were?

To find that info, go to this page: https://www.ebay.com/ship/labels/seller-hub

Under the column labeled Dispatch details / Initial label cost, click on the shipping service link. When the pop up appears, expand the section on the bottom right if you need more details than what's shown on the left.

Looks like the item you sold was pretty large.

That should have been local pick up only.

Don't know the package size, but bet it was pretty big?:

Have a great day.

The listing says 90 pounds and 39 x 28 inches and carrier is USPS ground advantage which is way over the limit for that service. USPS wouldn't accept the package would they???

Thank you for that information. I believe that UPS was being dishonest in not stating that info up front, if they had done so I would not have shipped. This was my first attempt at selling on EBAY and my last. Now I need to  figure out how to appeal the decision. Again, thank you.

As said above @hammondeggs-oe , you need to appeal based on the measurements. Since UPS measured it initially at the lower dimensions you'll need to contact eBay customer service and ask them to file an appeal. Did you save a receipt that showed the initial measurements? If so you can take a pic of that and DM it to eBay customer service on social media.
