Shipping Exclusions Bug for Protectorates

I ran into a shipping bug where Ebay allowed a buyer in one of my exclusions, specifically protectorates to purchase my item and the shipping charge was about $25 more than the farthest part of US.

I called Ebay and they agreed it was a bug and they told me to cancel the item. I told them no I won't do that for their mistake. I told them it was their mistake and they needed to deal with the problem.

It was not the buyers fault so I decided to ship the item and pay the extra charge, and I had ebay credit me the difference between my shipping to the west coast (I'm on the easy coast) and what I paid to ship to Puero Rico.

So do not let Ebay tell you to just cancel the item.

The credit comes in the form of a site credit to use when you buy items.

I only looked at one of your listings.  That location was NJ.  The listing states that it ships to USA, and it does exclude Protectorates.  But, I do not believe Puerto Rico is considered a Protectorate but part of the USA since it has a zip code.  Instead of using a private courier (Fed Ex or UPS) you could have shipped using USPS.

Yes i was going to say also i am in NY and it is actually cheaper for me to ship to Puerto Rico than to ship to California using USPS. It is considered part of United States, you are correct.

Have you got your shipping preferences set up correctly?  As others have mentioned Puerto Rico should cost any more to ship to than any other east coast destination if you're in New Jersey and you're shipping via USPS.

By the way, I don't believe PR is a protectorate.  If I'm not mistaken it is a territory, but I may be wrong.  Point is, it is a domestic destination.

Puerto Rico is considered a protectorate or territory. All the territories/protectorates have US zipcodes.

To exclude Puerto Rico, a seller has to exclude protectorates, AND Puerto Rico in the countries list. (a buyer can have a Puerto Rico as a country address or a US zipcode territories type Puerto Rico address.)

OP's sold listings I looked at have both excluded - looks like eBay's fault.

Puerto Rico is a territory. 

I am on the east coast and ship there regularly. 

Should not have cost you $25 more than to west coast.

But OP isn't shipping via USPS, he uses FedEx.

Yes, PR and all of the territories and protectorates have ZIP Codes, but the private carriers have surcharges for all of them so they do not cost the same as shipping to California.

oh Geez no. I ship with Fedex because the items are about 15lbs and I was forced to ship with USPS which is why it was $25 more.

It would have been $15 for me to ship my item via Fedex to the farthest part of the states, not including Hawaii and Alaska. It cost me $40 to ship to Puerto Rico (because it forced me to use USPS) even though I have it stated that I do not ship there.

So just call in and get the refund it's easy.

I have excluded Puerto Rico in all my listings a long time ago.

Ebay admitted this was a bug and my advice is to not let them tell you to just cancel the item, or even ask the buyer to cancel the item.

Ebay refused to cancel the item and admit it was their fault to the buyer, so go ahead and Ship your item as it was not the buyers fault this happened and certainly not your fault. 

Just get the refund when you call in and go ahead and ship your item.

Within GarageSale (a Macintosh application for eBay) these options are found under Shipping > Excluded Locations Tab.

Puerto Rico is listed under "Central America and Caribbean" as is the U.S. Virgin Islands. Protectorates are listed under "Domestic Location". "Oceania" contains other U.S. related lands such as American Samoa.

Why would you ship to a place that you exclude and don't want to ship to - but now want to ship to just because of a system glitch?

Yes I did realize they usually use fedex, did not know how heavy the item was. I was just saying in my experience, shipping to PR cheaper than west coast usually using USPS unless its a heavy item. You know something weird happened recently to my husband on his account, he does not ship outside country except PR. No matter what he has blocked they can still buy. Anyways when he went to print label ebay wouldn't let him print and said it was an international sale. Go figure..... I am stumped on that one.
