Shipping Defaulting to Higher Shipping Option?

Today when I went to ship I noticed something strange. When I go to the "Print your shipping label" page (for single labels, not bulk shipping) it was defaulting to the next highest shipping option instead of the default/buyer selected.

So media mail was defaulting to First Class, First Class was defaulting to Priority and Priority was defaulting to Priority Mail Express!

I've never seen this before. It always defaults to "buyer selected" which for me is whatever I set the shipping to be when I listed since I only give one option unless a buyer contacts me requesting other arrangements.

As a result today I almost paid for a label for Priority Mail EXPRESS!

Is eBay doing this to try to mitigate shipping delays by defaulting all items go a faster route than the buyer selected that way it'll be able to make in during the guaranteed delivery date or is this just another glitch?

Either way it's messed up and needs to be fixed.

Re: Shipping Defaulting to Higher Shipping Option?

This is for sure by design as nothing else was changed. If just 1% of labels pay $28 instead of $3 ebay will make a fortune on their cut from the usps and as an added bonus they get to bend their sellers over more and punish them for being filthy capitalists..........even though ebay is.........well you get it.

Re: Shipping Defaulting to Higher Shipping Option?

It used to default to buyer selected service.  Now everything in Priority or Express.

This is likely because of the USPS delay warning.  They need to set buyer expectations better instead of trying to bankrupt sellers.  Today they defaulted to $8 Priority Mail on a $5 free shipping order.

Many buyers are also taking advantage of the USPS situation to file not received claims.  They get their refund, then they get their product.   Media Mail is particularly slow.  Upgrading that to first class for a few cents is a reasonable precaution against eBay refund policies.

Use the "tell us what you think" option for every shipment to complain.

Re: Shipping Defaulting to Higher Shipping Option?

STILL NOT CORRECTED as of this morning 9/6.

Now it defaults to PRIORITY mail @ $7.57 instead of $2.84 first class.

I anyone at eBay listening?

I used first class (NOT FLAT RATE but CALCULATED) on almost all my listings as you can see in the shipping page screen shot attached.

Re: Shipping Defaulting to Higher Shipping Option?

Today it started defaulting my listings to UPS 2 Day Air

You read that right.

I've never shipped an eBay package video USPS in all my years of selling. There's not even anywhere to drop off a UPS package ANYWHERE near me.

The frustrating part is TWICE because I was in a hurry I bought and paid for the UPS labels.

Now, correct me if I'm wrong: but since this goes on my invoice only if I use them I don't have to void anything, just not use them, correct?

Re: Shipping Defaulting to Higher Shipping Option?

I would call eBay to find the answer and also check your Paypal account to see if you were charged. Both eBay and Paypal need to refund the charges made for this.

Fortunately I noticed this before hitting the "purchase button"

STILL NOT CORRECTED as of this morning 9/9 but it is different.

Now it defaults to UPS @ $16.33 instead of $2.93 first class

I anyone at eBay listening? Do you have a programmer that knows how to correct this?

Re: Shipping Defaulting to Higher Shipping Option?

another issue noticing that when you go to purchase ebay standard intl, or fedex domestic...it says will charge you...thats all it says, it no longer says will charge to your monthly invoice after use,,,so where and when is it going to charge now??? banking on here is getting really difficult between this and managed payments, is this just a glitch or an actual change as of today??

Re: Shipping Defaulting to Higher Shipping Option?

I just got sent to the new Ebay labels page today and it won't let me select Media which is what the customer selected for the literature they bought.   It defaulted from the 2.80 media mail to the 8.10 priority mail.

I Chatted with an ebay rep about the problem and they said ebay is no longer going to allow you to buy media mail postage from them yet the option is clearly there just locked out.  So you have to go to another provider and upload all the info.  print the label then link your account or manually import all the tracking info.  Nice heads up since I sell around 30 items a day,  All literature and use media mail exclusively.

Re: Shipping Defaulting to Higher Shipping Option?

Seems ebay is having alot of "glitches" I couldn't even reply to this post earlier or start a new thread on my shipping dilemma.  Glad i found yours as it seems to be a similar issue to mine.

You can buy MM postage, but only if the item is listed in the book or media category. If you have a collectible book listed in another category, the MM postage option will be unavailable.

Catalogs don't qualify for Media Mail.   https://about.usps.com/notices/not121/not121.htm

Re: Shipping Defaulting to Higher Shipping Option?

Well that means the rep (another professional or expert,  I'm really tiring of them this year) was wrong,  because he said it was not going to be offered at all.  I told him it was right there on the page,  just not highlighted.  I really hate them policing my business.  It's between me and the post office wether it qualifies.  Ebay should have no say.

I pay for a second category on every listing to get better exposure,  because of that they are going to penalize me.  Great.

Glad to see the fall seller update said we are making improvements to help you run your business.  This is a great way to help me run my business.

Re: Shipping Defaulting to Higher Shipping Option?

I was able to successfully ship media mail yesterday but have been worried about them doing away with it because of the problems.

I use it as the default for books and manuals.

The bottom line is if I sell something set the default media mail and then it won't let me ship that way than I'm cancelling and refunding and eBay better have my back 100% on that as far as metrics, defects, feedback and credits go because that's **bleep**.

My understanding is that USP and FedEx labels are billed on the invoice at the end of the month. When I accidentally bought those two USP labels the other day I went to select void and got a message that it wasn't necessary because I am only billed on my invoice **when the label is used** so I guess as long as I didn't use the label (i.e. it was scanned) than I won't be charged.

Re: Shipping Defaulting to Higher Shipping Option?

I tried pay pal and eventually did print a label but how do you format to 4x6?  No matter what I tried,  even downloading it to a PDF and altering it I couldn't get it to orient properly to the 4x6 format.  I just chased it around the paper, even with resizing it wouldn't work.  Eventually I gave up and printed it on a letter sized paper then cut it out,  but that's a pain in the butt when you do a bunch of labels and a big waste of paper.

Now I will have more shipping sources to keep track of come tax time.  As I said way to smooth things out for sellers to provide a better experience for buyers.  What a crock.

Same issue. Be very careful when shipping now.

Seems a bit devious and deliberate.
