Shipping Defaulting to Higher Shipping Option?

Today when I went to ship I noticed something strange. When I go to the "Print your shipping label" page (for single labels, not bulk shipping) it was defaulting to the next highest shipping option instead of the default/buyer selected.

So media mail was defaulting to First Class, First Class was defaulting to Priority and Priority was defaulting to Priority Mail Express!

I've never seen this before. It always defaults to "buyer selected" which for me is whatever I set the shipping to be when I listed since I only give one option unless a buyer contacts me requesting other arrangements.

As a result today I almost paid for a label for Priority Mail EXPRESS!

Is eBay doing this to try to mitigate shipping delays by defaulting all items go a faster route than the buyer selected that way it'll be able to make in during the guaranteed delivery date or is this just another glitch?

Either way it's messed up and needs to be fixed.

Re: Shipping Defaulting to Higher Shipping Option?

I checked my last 5 sales that are in queue and they are showing First Class, just as listed. Hmmm...

Re: Shipping Defaulting to Higher Shipping Option?

I'm having the same issue starting on 9/3.  For me, It is defaulting to Priority Mail Express for every order instead of the 'Buyer Selected' option.  And I DID accidentally purchase a Priority Express $28 shipping label rather than the $3 First Class shipping!  Then I had to cancel the label but now will need to wait several days for USPS to refund that money to me.   Ebay, please fix this bug - It needs to go back to pre-selecting the shipping option in  the listing, not Express.  Thank you.

Re: Shipping Defaulting to Higher Shipping Option?

Hello all,

Same thing here, on a couple refreshes of shipping after entering in the packed dimensions I dang near accidentally purchased Express Mail (which I don't even offer).

Was not sure if it was a new feature, new update, new marketing strategy, new idea, E.T.C. .. ...

Started happening to me on 09-03-2020.

Same here, it's says buyer selected free priority shipping on a 5.99 item with free 1st class shipping. I don't even offer priority. I just ignore it and ship 1st class. Definitely a glitch.

Re: Shipping Defaulting to Higher Shipping Option?

Had 3 go wrong like that since 9/3.  The buyer selected shipping is shown as first class, but that isn't overriding whatever the eBay monkeys want as default.

Re: Shipping Defaulting to Higher Shipping Option?

For me, It is defaulting to Priority Mail Express for every order instead of the 'Buyer Selected' option.  I called eBay support yesterday, 9/3 and the representative told me no one else has reported this. It happened yesterday morning and again this morning, 9/4. Fortunately, I noticed it yesterday and changed the first shipment from $26+ to first class at $2.84. Glad I didn't have to go through cancelling the label and waiting for a USPS refund.

I guess eBay wants to collect a % on a much higher shipping rate!

Same and you have to be careful not to pick it

Re: Shipping Defaulting to Higher Shipping Option?

Some of mine that will ship by 1st Class(free, no buyer choice actually presented) are defaulting to Priority because I changed the shipping in the listing from "standard"  to "economy" to try to defeat eBays unrealistic estimated delivery time.

Re: Shipping Defaulting to Higher Shipping Option?

Well, I guess I'm glad it's not just me although I hate anyone else is going through this.

For me a lot of mine are default to Express but that seems to be for Priority listings. It seems to be like @buyselljack2016 said where it's defaulting to the next highest because First Class are going up to Priority and this does seem to be because of the estimated delivery time issues.

If this is why eBay is doing this this is NOT the solution. It just makes us more likely to make a mistake and none of us are going to wittingly pay more to ship an item than the buyer paid.

Very shady on their part.

Re: Shipping Defaulting to Higher Shipping Option?

Yes I have had this happen a few times now. First class is selected but  EBAY has Priority mail selected.

Re: Shipping Defaulting to Higher Shipping Option?

I also called this in to ebay support and asked them to make it high priority since it will quickly deplete my bank account if I keep accidentally accepting the Priority Mail Express default!  Even if you cancel the label and create a new one for the correct service, you still need to wait several days for USPS to refund the money.

Re: Shipping Defaulting to Higher Shipping Option?

It's been like that for a while for me, probably because I changed everything from calculated to flat economy to get the extra shipping time window.

You just have to pay attention and select what YOU need, not what Ebay things the buyer needs.

I get it - Ebay wants buyers to get their stuff fast. All internet selling venues worth their salt want their buyers to get their stuff fast. But automatically defaulting to the fastest and coincidentally  most expensive shipping method and hoping the seller isn't paying attention really isn't a good way to do it. ('ya hear that, Ebay?)

There's nothing to correct. I'm pretty sure it's by design, at least if you use flat rate shipping.
