I shipped a chair I sold on ebay, I have sold these before but its been a long time, I may have used freight back then. I paid $263 for shipping. Now 3 wks later I received notice of an adjustment to my shipping and an overcharge fee, original dimensions were said to me to be 41x32x29 but UPS says its actually 41x34x29 and they charged an additional cost of $1783.00 to my account. Ebay customer service said they filed a dispute but really didn't ask me any questions. I don't have a lot of confidence I will receive a fair shot at disputing this. These are very popular chairs that sell on ebay a lot for $700-$1500 with shipping- these aren't just big box store sales but individual sellers like myself, I did not box the chair just wrapped it with some squishy foam etc. the chair itself is about 2 inches less on all dimensions. My position here is either their measurements are inaccurate or that this upcharge is excessive. Ebay says it will take up to 14 business days (so potentially 3 wks) to resolve. Its upsetting to me I am not allowed to be part of this process I don't think ebay is really advocating for me here.
I do understand that at the end of the day if they say I was two inches over I was two inches over but jesus what's two inches to these people when 1.1 inch and 1.9 inches is ALWAYS 2 inches? its bull**bleep**.
If anyone had any advice besides tips on preventing this in the future I'd appreciate it.

This is a carrier charge not Ebay so when you say "Its upsetting to me I am not allowed to be part of this process I don't think ebay is really advocating for me here" you would be correct. It's the carrier with the decision.
My advice is to sell locally anything large or oversized. The situation you described is a common complaint in this community and to avoid this situation don't ship large items cause Fed Ex and UPS will adjust your charges and in your case that is a large amount to adjust. Stick to smaller items which can be shipped USPS.

FedEx and UPS have many 'extra" charges.
If the item is only wrapped in foam and there is no cardboard box around it, you will get an extra fee charged.

Wow...I'm surprised they even accepted it without a box. "squishy foam" is not an acceptable outer packaging material. I wonder if UPS had charges for a total repackage added as well, or added special handling charges at each leg of the journey.
I've often said we are in the shipping business when we sell on line...anyone can sell the chair, the key is, can we ship it? Hope you get some relief from the $1783....that is a lot

Btw, do you know if UPS transferred this shipment their UPS freight line? If, so that is very expensive without an account. For example, if the cost was $1780 for a list freight charge, with a freight/logistics account that charge would be about $400-600. Really, no idea what the total $1783 included without more info
