Shipping CDs in a large case via media mail?

Hey everyone!

I'm pondering selling my CD collection on eBay and was wondering if this abides by media mail rules.

All of my CDs are held in large cases of ~200 as in the picture below.  In the past, I had transferred over the cd and artwork from the jewel cases and threw the jewel cases away.  Given I want to sell these CDs in large lots, and CDs aren't super valuable these days, it only makes sense to ship them through media mail.

If the cases are full of CDs, is it valid for me to ship via media mail the CDs within the case itself, or do I need to remove all of the CDs and ship them loose?

Re: Shipping CDs in a large case via media mail?

With the current postal delays, shipping media mail sounds like a recipe for disaster.   The buyer will claim INR, will get refunded out of your money, the CD's will be delivered a month later and the buyer will not repay you.   So, not only do you lose the CD's you also lose the shipping cost and your time & effort to boot.

It would be cheaper to either throw them in the trash or donate them to your library or Goodwill or a friend.

I think you'd be fine shipping them in the case using Media Mail. I don't think Media Mail is a good choice now, though.

Good luck.

@alcoforever - I understand the consequences of shipping anything via media mail at any time; I would not be shipping these items anytime soon, so not worried about the Christmas season delays currently in effect.

Worst case situation, I lose the media mail cost to ship my CDs and know that at least someone else can use them - the other option is for me to throw them directly in the trash. 🙂

Anyone else who can answer the actual question?

You can ship them media mail with no problems.  What you can't ship media mail is blank CDs, but your recordings are fine - the actual container/housing makes no difference as long as it just has the artwork/liner notes.

ETA: Don't trash them - donate if you can't sell them.  The CD sections of our local thrifts are always filled with people looking for titles.

Re: Shipping CDs in a large case via media mail?

I've shipped as many media mail items in the last 4-6 weeks between 2 stores  - books from one, CD's the other - as I have all other classes.  At the moment I have only 1 media mail overdue, and a half dozen Priority overdue.  Some of my media mail items have actually reached buyer in record time for media mail.   It took 4 weeks for one of my Priority.  YMMV...

Yes, no problem shipping the CD's in your cases.

Nothing useful to add but burn, piano island burn is still one of my favorite records after almost 20 years...

Unexpected that anyone would even know who The Blood Brothers are. 🙂

Re: Shipping CDs in a large case via media mail?

I don't see any issue with that whatsoever, and I dout any reasonable person at the post office would object.

As for media mail in general - I've been shipping stuff by media every day this month and last month with no issues whatsoever.

And I have that 'Crimes' CD by the Blood Brothers 🙂

Re: Shipping CDs in a large case via media mail?

I use Media Mail for about half my shipments.........

Right now it is slower than normal but I still have yet to have a single Media Mail shipment take more than 10 days (normal is 5 - 7 days except for parts of the Pacific Northwest).

To the OP, no problem using Media Mail as you describe.

One example that would not be ok would be a magazine with a CD attached to the cover, this would be considered a magazine and not eligible for MM.

I guess I'm just unlucky.  I'm waiting for a MM package that has been sitting in the sorting center in Pittsburgh since December 9.
