Shipping Big Items like CRT Televisions on eBay - Be Careful!

When your shipped big items like TVs, your chances of something coming up as damaged increases. We sell big CRT TV's on eBay and sometimes they may come up as damage in shipping. They don't always come up as damaged, but there has been a few times when that happen.

It's always important to put insurance on big items like TV's in case of situations like damage in shipping. Insurance costed about a few dollars more, but it's so worth it, in case of emergencies like shipping damage or lost in mail. We recommend that you shipped with USPS because we think that it's so much faster and safer than FedEx. There was one time where we shipped a TV with FedEx, and the TV came up as damage in shipping, and the insurance process took so much longer than USPS. In our opinion, we think USPS is much easier and faster than FedEx. Also, put free shipping on big items because if you need to file a insurance claim, you will get the money back for shipping as well when you put free shipping. Another thing is that make sure that you take pictures and videos of items to show the condition of it. If an item comes up damage in shipping, make sure the buyer sends you pictures of the damage so the insurance company can see. It's important to show how the TV was before shipping and after shipping. With all the TV's we have sold on eBay, we would say that 3 TV's have came up as damage, out of 10.

Finally, make sure to package the items with bubble wrap, cardboard safely and securely.  Found a video link on tips of how to shipped items correctly if anybody would like to see. Link down below.

That's a horrible percentage of damage.  If you get insurance payouts, consider yourself very lucky because at that rate the problem is more likely your own packaging, rather than the carrier handling.

For a huge, heavy, electronic item like a honking big TV, bubble wrap and cardboard are not sufficient.  It would take a lot more than that to stabilize and protect the TV.

Your top priority should be to package safely.  Concerns about insurance should be secondary, if at all.

Re: Shipping Big Items like CRT Televisions on eBay - Be Careful!

TV sets should be shipped in original carton when they came out of the factory, there are too many components and parts in the TV SET,any shaking ,dropping, moving around could rattle them ,they may look fine, but something could have been loose inside.

You are lucky insurance company approved your claim.

I agree 3 out of ten is too much,it is 30%.

USPS is also known to ask the recipient to take the item to the post office to have the clerk review the damage.

i would stop selling TV set unless you have the original packaging

I can't imagine shipping a CRT anywhere. That would be best sold as Local Pickup Only. Besides, that way the buyer can see that it's working (if it's supposed to be in working order). Aside from the potential for shipping damage, you run the risk of a Not As Described dispute if the buyer claims that it's not working when he unpacked it.
