A customer purchased a product today and I realized that this customer lives fairly close. I was wondering if I am allowed to deliver the package myself? I will be taking the subway, so the cost to and back will be quite close to the shipping cost.
If it is allowed, do I just set the product to "marked as shipping"?

That sounds like it's not worth the trouble, especially since (as mentioned in the other post) you'd have no protection if the buyer files a fake "Item not received" claim.
To answer your actual question: Yes, you can keep the shipping money. It's yours to spend however you choose.

It's going to cost you the same to personally deliver as it does to mail? Why would you do it then? Do you just have an overabundance of free time?

Better to play it safe and ship the item to the buyer. If the buyer opens an INR, you won't be able to prove the item was delivered without a tracking number.

I'd advise against it.

You will lose the protection of tracking to prove the buyer got it. If you don't mind losing the item and the money then go for it. The buyer could easily say they didn't get the item and get their money back.
As a buyer, I would be very freaked out if a seller showed up on my doorstep. I buy online becasue I DON"T want to have to deal with people.
Would you want a buyer showing up at your door?

As posted, if you do the personal delivery, it may/will cause a problem somewhere along the line. My take is not only will the buyer file an INR - and you would have to refund the full amount paid; and/or with your kind jester, the buyer may want to have the shipping fee refunded and it could get messy. I could think of more scenerios, but I need more coffee 🙂
I would just mail it and be done with it. I've had seller's close to me (not that many), but each shipped and had tracking to prove it was delivered promptly.

As has been previously stated, you are taking a chance.
Buyer can file INR (item not received) and you would be required to provide tracking that shows delivery.
You won't have that, so you will be refunding the customer (completely).
You need to send it so that you are protected.

In addition to it being a risk for you, most buyers don't want you coming to their house, and nobody would want to pay you to do so.

Bad idea all the way around, anything can happen these days.

Exactly.
A lot of people enjoy the relative anonimity of buying online and gladly pay for shipping. Since it was paid as asked, the seller should ship as advertised.
Not a bad question, there are just too many factors involved and it's best to just go by the book. Selling is already like walking on eggshells here. Good luck~
