Sellers need to blame themselves for issues encountered from USPS shipping delays!

My heart goes out to sellers significantly impacted by USPS shipping delays.  I’ve had my share of worry about lack of scans at the post office, items stuck in limbo, potential INR’s, etc..  However, It is time for sellers to stop whining about the USPS and delivery delays.  We’ve all had the opportunity and vent, but now is the time to act like functioning adults, take responsibility for our mistakes, and move on.

Let’s not pretend that sellers shipping mid-November and onwards didn’t understand that there might be issues with shipping delays.  Come on – the first COVID lockdowns weren’t that long ago, and we all knew that B&M retail was taking a huge hit this year, and that the USPS/FedEx/UPS would be slammed.  Me, I got a bit greedy – shipped media mail when I should have upgraded to priority, used the prepaid drop box instead of waiting in line for an actual scan, and waited a few days longer than I should have to put my store on vacation mode.  Those mistakes are on me, not on my buyers, not on eBay, not on the USPS (no, I don’t want to join your sure-to-never-launch class action suit).

The same sellers that are adamant that they “own” their selling, and outraged that eBay would dictate MP, are now crying that eBay is siding with buyers on items that have been “lost” for several weeks and didn’t make it in time for Christmas? If you own it, own it.  If not, take whatever comes your way, and stop complaining.  Life happens - deal with it.

eBay is the facilitator – but we own our performance.  We choose the carrier, we decide when to sell, we control pricing.  If you can’t deal with it, absolutely, shut it down until the situation is accommodating to your selling constraints.  Come on – let’s grow up, learn from our mistakes, and come back better than before.

I have two eBay accounts.  Most of my activity is on my main account, this account is for posting and for rare eBay purchases of items that I’ll sell on my other account.  A lot of us have selling accounts and posting accounts.

I get ya. USPS and ebay do hold some responsibility. Even if it's just 1%. I believe its higher.

I've been selling 20 yrs so I didnt even have worries. List, sold, mailed. Repeat. Life as a seller.

There are many others newer and naive. They are learning just as I did. They didn't have the knowledge from the past or some had literally no idea what could, would and did happen. Don't shame them either for their ignorance.

It's gonna take awhile. There are deep resentments now. Give people time to heal. It definitely ain't over.

No thanks.

Buyers have many options for shipping and they almost exclusively choose the cheapest, so that's a hard no.

Yeah. Sorry. But no. Disagree and ignore.

Self awareness and a mind set of continuous improvement I got. In fact, I continue to believe MOST sellers GOT IT.

EBay does not EVER improve. So deflect , no. Blame, yes.

I blame them for shedding all responsibility while grubbing for more of what is, after all,  MY pie.

Buyer and I mutually agree to trade, which requires putting the item at risk by putting it in the mail. Buyer and seller should, therefore, also share that risk. We two could agree how to proceed in case of delay.

Ebay takes no risk, incurs no cost   and so should have no say.

Buying on line is nice without risk, but would still be done if the risks ... and really only meaning the need for patience -- were shared.

Re: Sellers need to blame themselves for issues encountered from USPS shipping delays!

Buyers have an equal responsibility.

They too heard the warnings about vastly increased orders on-line, potential slow down with shipping.

What did they do?   Order on line one week before Christmas and expect it to arrive before Christmas.

The post office itself gave 12/18 as the deadline for guaranteed arrival before Christmas.

Did buyers listen?  Obviously not, looking at the number who purchased after that deadline.

They had a choice...they could shop locally.  Many small business stores were offering curbside pickup.

And eBay does bear responsibility for not correctly setting expectations.  They too were privy to the USPS deadline....yet did not adjust expected arrival dates to be after Christmas.

I paused 12/14.  I had my final US package delivered 12/23 - the postal search I had done accomplished nothing in terms of where this item was, the destination PO believed it was at the distribution center, who believed the package was on it's way to the PO (could have been loaded on a pack mule and gotten there sooner).  My package from Canada, mailed 11/30 had an expected date of 12/23.  12/24 it showed arrival at the delivering Canada PO.

We are all currently dealing with a very angry world - nothing is going the way it should go.   We sellers are all dealing with demanding customers who think we work miracles, control shipping companies, and have magic wands to grant their every wish.

Oh, the irony of having to consider shutting down your business during the busiest time of year for sales, just to protect it. I did consider it, but instead I tried switching all my USPS shipping to Priority  Mail. Also raised my prices to partially compensate for the higher cost. At least Priority Mail comes with insurance. Didn't sell as much as I would have, I suspect. All my packages arrived late but things do seem to be improving. The clerk at my local post office said things would get better after Christmas. My hat is off to the USPS, they have been busting their butts during all of this.

@powell-memorabilia

I think the elephant in the room is CUSTOMER SERVICE!  Sure looks like there are many that do not understand what they COULD be doing or have a "ship it and forget it" mentality.  I just love the "I have no control over the USPS" excuse.

Look at some of the threads and a few sellers are chiming in that they adjusted their business to include communication with their buyers.  Some noted the shipping delays and offered to cancel sales or continue with the sale recognizing shipping wasn't going to go smoothly.  Others noted the delays to their buyers and pledged to watch the tracking.  Then if delays occurred they started the 2 step Missing Mail process and reported such to their buyers.

Sure looks like proactive sellers had fewer, if any, INR cases because buyers were glad that someone was paying attention and doing what they could.

So I think this is really what you were trying to say without actually saying it.  Provide top-level customer service.  When things get tough the tough get going.  Or as the Marines say: improvise, adapt and overcome!

Re: Sellers need to blame themselves for issues encountered from USPS shipping delays!

Except that it untrue. Both Fedex and UPS have also experienced delays. The original posters seems to be under the impression that sellers should have a crystal ball to know which particular carrier to use who may not be impacted by an overwhelming number of packages being shipped. News flash - there are only so many carriers to choose from and they are all having issues, granted none as prolonged as the USPS, but none-the-less they have all experienced delays. Fedex right now has a disclaimer on their website that record ecommerce has significantly delayed shipments, and while UPS doesn't display a similar disclaimer, a quick review of expected shipping time frames on their site also shows that they are off their normal mark.  USPS is the one being beaten up the most because they also handle smaller packages that the UPS and Fedex do not, so the issue with the USPS is highlighted more, but none of them are running on time and Ebay has to be well aware of this, yet they continue to promote unrealistic shipping times even a month into the known delays.

CS is definitely a piece of it.  Given that I had to make up for my mistakes, I’ve been over communicating with shipment updates.  I’ve had three INR’s raised - I asked the buyers to raise them.  All three were for Christmas gifts.  I could have had many more INR’s - but I think that communications and some loyal buyers have been a big help.

Re: Sellers need to blame themselves for issues encountered from USPS shipping delays!

Why was this post edited to appear that I support jonavanbod_0 ?  I do not support their conclusion at all.

If you went outside of eBay to arrange your shipment then that is on you.

Sellers who utilized the shipping tools that eBay provided for their use and shipped the item on time are in no way at fault for delays.

The buyer has a responsibility to know your shipping options and make a choice if they want to buy your item.  As far as USPS, nothing has a guaranteed delivery date unless you pay for a Express Delivery Service.  Everything else is a Estimate based on several factors.

I looked at one of my items to ship Priority Mail to my Zip 88310 (6 miles) and it says between Jan 11 - 13.  I looked at the same item shipped to 10001 (near 2000 miles) and it says delivery between Jan 9 - 12.  That is a very long time, so what is it that I could possibly do to shorten the shipping time?

 take responsibility for our mistakes

Please let me know what part of selecting ebays recommended/preferred shipping partner (USPS), dropping the package off following USPS's guidelines/policies the same day it was ordered, and providing tracking to the customer right away was a "mistake". Literally doing everything ebay guides you to do is a "mistake"?

I guess it was my mistake USPS sold me 2 day priority shipping that was really 4 weeks, i should have known not to trust that the service i paid for would be honored.
