Seller won't issue refund and the return has automatically closed.

I received it on June 10. The item was shipped out for 1 day after I received it for return on June 11. I waited the long delivery period due to Covid-19 shipping delays, and it finally delivered back to the seller on July 7. I wanted to confirm the seller received it, I messaged the seller and did not receive an answer or a refund. It's been nearly 20 days and I still haven't received any sort of refund and the ebay return status isn't even saying it was shipped back despite having shipped it 1 day after the fact. I have proof of the item being shipped back, and it being delivered.

If anyone could help me resolve this it would be much appreciated as I can't report an issue due to the return being closed.

Returns have timelines.

You request the return on eBay. 

You return the item.

When tracking shows delivered the seller normally has 2 business days to refund. If the seller fails to refund you have only 10 days to ask  eBay to force the seller to refund. I think during the pandemic the seller is given 5 days to refund. But still you must ask for help by 10 days if  the refund wasn't made.  After that the return case closes with no refund.

 

If you paid with PayPal you might be able to get your money back through a PayPal dispute.

paypal.com/disputes/   Let them know you returned the item through an eBay case but eBay closed the case and you were not refunded. Give them the tracking number to show the seller received the item back and ask them to return your money.

Did you use the return label ebay supplied?

 

Your return was delivered July 7. Ebay closed the return (because it was not returned as far as they know) on July 21.

 

Why? I'd want to figure this out to avoid this situation in the future.

You have to upload the tracking number to eBay, otherwise they have no way of knowing that the item was delivered back to the buyer.

 

If the seller has indeed received the item back, and they are not responding to you, then I would file a claim with my credit/debit card.

Yes I did use the return label supplied, I also updated the status to shipped but it never went through.

Did you take the package to the post office counter and have the clerk SCAN the package?  Once that is done, the Returns Request should show it was SHIPPED.
