Refund Confusion

I have an interesting predicament. Basically what happened was at the end of August, 25th to be exact, a buyer purchased an item from me. I then purchased the shipping label for it (it wasn’t free shipping). However right after I done so the buyer changed their mind about buying. I wasn’t upset and I refunded their order with the cost of the shipping label. Fast forward to this evening I got a message from eBay that my buyers “package” had been revived by the post office, clear across the country. 
What do you guys make of this? Any info would help. Thanks

@youn2240 put together a lot of really good information on free shipping, free delivery, shipping included, delivery included. It was pretty difficult for a lot of folks to comprehend - even I get a bit lost at times.

Please look at your recent orders in your seller hub. 

 

Check to see if any of those orders show 9434608106245208301673 as the tracking number. 

 

I'm guessing that you may have reprinted that old label and attached it to a recent package you shipped. If that's the case, the original buyer (who requested to cancel) will get the item.

But it's possible that the package went through the Philly hub if the recipient in the address on that label has mail pass through PA.

I also looked and they live on the west coast, so also not close to Philly

You'll be re-charged for the label. Keep an eye on your transactions. May or may not get a notification from eBay saying "there's an update on your shipping labels" in about a week. From USPS' perspective, you bought a label, got refunded for not using it, and then used it. Reporting it will get it all sorted eventually but I'm not sure if reporting it right away will be enough to prevent you getting billed again in the meantime.

That may not happen.  While tracking numbers do get recycled, this one does seem to  be a little quick.  But USPS does strange things from time to time.  To recharge this seller, USPS would have to prove that they bought the label.

It hadn't been recycled yet. It had been paid for, it had not been used, and it had not yet been recycled. That is the shipping equivalent of a blank check to a scammer.

You have no control over when or if USPS recycles a tracking number.

 

I'm aware there is a serious problem with thieves using fake tracking number or shipping things to a different address and scamming Buyers.  It isn't new, it has happened for years.  It is a horrible and destructive scam that hurts many people.  But the recycling of tracking numbers is NOT the same thing.  It is a legit thing that USPS does.  

 

There is no way for us to know which of the two things is going on with the op's tracking number.

The original one yes.  Records would also prove the seller voided the label and USPS refunded them.  

 

We do not have enough info on the currently active package to even know what is going on.  Was it USPS recycling the number faster than we are use to or is someone committing a scam on someone else.  We simply don't have enough information to know what the heck is going on.
