Privatizing the USPS

According to the Washington Post, Trump is seriously considering privatizing the USPS. I am very, very, worried. Your thoughts?

Privatizing the USPS

Having worked for the USPS as a carrier, I think it's a great idea!  The current contracts for carriers (city and rural contracts are separate) are complete rubbish.  Rural carriers are paid by the route, regardless of how long it takes (imagine the difference in delivery time between say May and December) and city carriers are paid by the hour.  The contracts provide little to no protection for either group, leaving both out on the road for up to 12 hours a day.  There are zero merit raises and the harder you work, the less you actually make because you'll just be worked longer and harder for the same money.

If the USPS is privatized, it will likely allow the entire delivery side to qualify for a Teamsters contract.  Having also worked for UPS, there is no comparison in the contracts.  The Teamsters take care of their employees, making those jobs far more desirable.  Additionally, the administrators and bloated fat cats currently protected under the civil service rules will be held to the same standards as other managers in private companies, meaning they will be fireable. As it stands, you can't touch these turds because they're protected under the same guidelines as all other government slackers.  I know lots of people are anti-union just on principle but this kind of work is why unions came into existence in the first place as it is very easy to run employees right into the ground.  Good contracts motivate employees by providing attractive benefits and decent wages.

I look forward to a day when the USPS actually has to compete (and thereby be accountable) with the private carriers.  At present, if you happen to have one of the many horrible carriers doing your postal route, you're just screwed.  If you have a bad carrier on a route with one of the private carriers, you can actually do something about it.

In the end, it's business and private businesses always care more about their bottom lines than government does. Mark my word, if the USPS is privatized it will markedly improve every aspect of the organization (after what would likely be a rough transition).

Why "worry" about stuff you have no control over? With the eBay discount, UPS & FedEx are already cheaper than USPS on most orders over 1lb. And on items less than 1lb they're only like a dollar more. So if USPS really "triples" their rate I'll just switch to UPS or FedEx, which I've already done with most orders over 1lb anyway. This is hardly something I'm going to "worry" about. Not to mention, it might not even happen

UPS does not deliver everywhere, has rural delivery charges and their depots are often very inconvenient for picking anything  up. If I were depending on mail order delivery for medication, as many do (particularly elderly and rural), I would not want it in the hands of UPS or FedEx.

I'm not worried about things I cannot change, but there are reasons not to use UPS/FedEx.

I am waiting for Amazon to throw their hat in the ring to compete with USPS, UPS, FedEx and others for shipping packages.   They already have a lot of the pieces ...

... not sure if they would want the letter mail part of shipping, they may just leave that for USPS ...

Well, that would be great for Prime members. Imagine everyone getting 2 day shipping for Free? 😂

The Washington Post is a serious newspaper and this is the place for this post. It will affect all eBay sellers. A private USPS is likely to charge three times current prices and refuse to deliver to certain areas and god knows all the extra fees an delivery times they will come up with

That thought is just ridiculous; people will just use Fedex/UPS if USPS Trippled their prices.

What cost me $12 will NOT cost $36!!

Most items I ship go either in Flat Rate boxes which saves me lots of money or other times just Priority Mail which can cost $80 or $90 or more. Before I buy a USPS label for bigger shipments, I check with UPS and do a shipping to check the prices, it is almost always way higher. I don't even bother with FedEx because their prices are absurd. I guess if you sell smaller and lighter items UPS and FedEx works, but for me, the USPS saves me lots of money and is very convenient. No pickup fees and Post Office conveniently located.  This is not true for all eBay sellers.

Saves you a lot of money because it's the costs are offset by tax payer.

The usps operates at multi billion loses every year.

Privitizing the USPS may actually be beneficial. Help remove the rot and massive labor costs.

Of course a lot of sellers here are happy to have cheaper rates and have others pay for them.

That's just wrong regarding pricing

UPS/Fedex are known for being CHEAPER for Large size/weight packages than USPS.

89029 to 61074 25lbs, 21" x 10" x 10"

USPS Ground Advantage $65

USPS Priority $90

Fedex Ground Saver $34

UPS Ground $37

The USPS is funded by the retail side, revenue is brought in from products (stamps, etc) and services.  The income from tax payers is basically non-existent.

Buying the USPS solves Amazon's last mile issues. I would think Amazon will buy the USPS if it gets the chance.

Never.  Amazon is never going to buy a unionized operation.

Amazon is never going to agree to a deal which requires they deliver to all parts of the US,

Amazon is being sued by D.C. because it will not run its own trucks into high crime areas, choosing to let USPS or UPS to do last mile.

I don’t find flat rate boxes and envelopes to be a bargain. They used to be, but with ground advantage my packages get there just as fast at half the price.
