Postman wants packages put in mailbox?

Anyone have issues with their Post office delivery person not wanting to pick up First Class packages from your front porch? I checked my camera today, and my postman comes to my door, puts his hands on his hips, picks up the package, then proceeds to look at my camera, and from what I could understand says into the camera "put this in the mailbox, because..you know. "  I am totally confused by this. He has picked up countless times before, I am letting it go, because I may have misunderstood what he said. I am curious though, am I supposed to put items in the mailbox if they fit? I mean they do offer the pickup service. I am in a rural area, but I just don't trust putting items in the mailbox.  Thoughts?

Sounds like to me they are telling you that it would be more secure if you put it in the mailbox instead of leaving it lying out in the open

You should try to discuss this directly with your carrier, since he has invented this situation.  

The official USPS form for requesting Carrier Pickup has a drop-down menu for choosing the package location; one of the 9 options is "on the porch" and another is "in/at mailbox." So you should be allowed to choose. OTOH, perhaps he has concerns about theft or weather-related damage.

Maybe you should ask your mail carrier directly ... and/or check with the Postmaster of your local post office to see if they have a particular policy about where pickups should be placed.  [I'm sure every post office has its own rules/preferences about things like that.]

Have you ever talked to your mailman? I see and talk to my mailman....I know he is off on Wednesdays. I know the time he comes by. I suggest to get to know your mailman. I give our mailman a large bottle of sparkling wine for Christmas. I don't leave anything for the mailman to pick up since I can walk ride my motorcycle to the post office. I live in an apartment building up a few hills...Pacific Heights. He is considered one of the more important people to me. I mean, I get mail 6 days a week.

Go to the Post Office and get several of the plastic bins/buckets. They will usually give you 3 or more at a time. Put your packages in there and then put the bin under (or near) the mailbox.

He might just want to be sure that they are outgoing and ready to pick up. You could also tape a note on the bin asking them to take the packages.

Our carrier is kind enough to usually leave the bin empty for us and to even drop off bins when we run low. Be kind to your carrier and they'll help you out a lot.

Thanks for your take on it. I am in a rural area. I cant really keep a eye on my mailbox. My packages are on my covered front porch, not out in the open. 😊

I would put in my mailbox if it fits. I am in a rural area also. I would also just do the package pick-up through the website with a note "package in mailbox *no flag up*" (if that's what you are afraid of).

I think your mail person is just being *ah hem*  LaZy.

Put them in the mailbox if they fit. If they don't, then put a note in the mailbox. Definitely tip your carrier. Mine is a sweetheart and will take all of my packages and scan them right there in front of the house.  I put everything in the mailbox. If it does not fit, I then drive it to the post office or I wait and bring it out to there in a plastic bag. Sadly, it's been a while since I had more than 2 items to ship in a day.

I used to put all of my packages for pick-up on my porch. But one day I received a note when my packages were picked up to put them at the bottom of my stairs or in the mailbox. I found out I had a new carrier - he was just a very nasty carrier. A couple years later, he was gone and my old carrier was back again.

Yes, we have wrote notes back and forth. He's a great guy. Just didn't know what had changed. I will talk with him, like I said maybe I heard him wrong.

I work it out this way... I put my packages in a bag hanging from my mailbox. (Easy enough for me; lots easier for him.) He scans on pickup and leaves my empty bag back in the box. I recommend this it if your logistics allow for it.

Your postman may have back issues and finds it difficult to bend down and pick up your packages.  Place a chair under your mail box to lift them higher for easy access.  Put your packages in a box with a possible small treat and a thank you note.
