Packaging & Shipping an airplane propeller

Hello,

Any suggestions on packaging and shipping a wooden airplane propeller. I have two propellers to ship - 6' and 7' in length. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks Kerry

It's not cost effective.

But if you insist, I would look at freight or Greyhound.

Make sure to look at "dimensional weight"

I would imagine they would be problematic to ship.   http://www.supercub.org/forum/showthread.php?41955-propeller-shipping

Sounds like a pickup only item if you ask me, but if you must ship, make a prop crate out of PVC pipe. http://yankee-aviation.com/pvcpropcrate.htm

You can get quotes here :

Not sure if Fedex or UPS would take something that long, they may.

I bet @sockmonkeydave  would have a few ideas.

Sorry I was out in the shed lookin for an AN23-13 clevis bolt.

Cut two stipps of light plywood, a little wider than the prop.

make the length such that you can put a bit of 2x4 at the ends.

If you want you can make a full box of plywood.

Sent a bunch like this no problems

Now a P-51 four blade... not so much.

Re: Packaging & Shipping an airplane propeller

See if your local GA airport can provide names of companies that sell/repair propellers, then you can contact them and try to get some details. Or the certified mechanic might have shipped one previously. Our propeller recently went out for repair and the airport's certified mechanic built a plywood box for it to ship out in. They have to be well stabilized. I think it had to go freight. But it traveled well going and coming back. Hope this helps.
