Package Returned to Sender... sent to inmate?

So I had a package returned to sender because it was refused and unable to be forwarded. According to the package, it was sent to a correctional facility and so it was refused. I received no notice from buyer about this, and I don't know what to do about the shipping costs. What should I do?

Really there is nothing to do except to block the buyer. It was refused by the institution, not the buyer. The item now belongs to you and no refund is due the intended buyer. I know it sounds cruel but really, there is nothing you can do. The inmates are allegedly aware that there are certain things they are not allowed to posses or obtain.

When the package returns to you, I would issue a refund less the shipping charge you incurred.

Until the original buyer files a chargeback?

More Likely someone wanted to send something to someone they knew. Many prisons only allow packages to come from approved businesses so it was refused.

I would take the high road, send the buyer a note letting them know the package was refused at the prison and I would refund them less shipping.

The others are correct @dehaa_27 that most prisons will refuse packages from 3rd party marketplaces. If you put a packing slip in the package that would have been enough for the package to get kicked back to you.

Once you have physical possession of the package, go to the actions column next to the order and select "send refund." On the next page, use the reason "other" and in the comments box note that the package was undeliverable and returned to sender. Issue a partial refund for item cost less shipping and pro-rated fees.

Refund but keep the shipping.  Block the buyer.  Out of curiosity, what did they buy?  A file? A weapon? Definitely send them an email.  Block them because they might re-buy and want the item sent to a house.
