Thor in my side. A Thor motorcycle helmet has kicked me in shipping. I listed it with an expected size of box and weight. This put the price of shipping around $100+/- Finally got a buyer who paid it BUT I was able to put it in a 2" smaller box and the shipping dropped to $50. I would like to refund the buyer the extra amount. They also could have paid less if they chose a slower shipping option. I have lost money by not overestimating the fees. Does the buyer see exactly what was paid by us for the shipping? Who gets the extra funds that eBay collects on the shipping?

You will receive full ship cost buyer paid, less eBay fees.
Buyer will not see actual label cost unless you check the box on the label purchase page that makes ship cost appear on the shipping label. Look at the printed label and you'll know for sure. If you need help finding the setting let us know.
If buyer paid for a faster shipping service, make sure you use that service. Do not downgrade to a slower service because it's less expensive. Buyer had a choice of 3 shipping services at checkout and they selected and paid for the carrier/service they want you to use.
You are under zero obligation to refund the buyer excess shipping, however if you choose to issue a partial refund you can find instructions here: https://www.ebay.com/help/selling/managing-returns-refunds/refunding-buyers-managed-payments-seller?...

Thank you! This helped tremendously. I don't mind going back in and refunding $ once I know it has shipped at that rate. I have noticed a couple underpayment charges to my account even though I choose larger sizes and weights. Thus why I want to be sure that eBay has figured the correct postage fees before refunding.
Thank you for the link to do the refunds! Finding my way to get there is like finding a road you don't always use and remembering which exit to take.
You have been a great help!
