Opened case for refund/return. Shipped but item returned to sender today.

I'm the buyer.

-July 2nd: Bought "New" item from a newer seller.

-July 6th: Item arrived. Was open box and clearly broken. Requested return from the seller

-July 11th: Case opened as the seller was not responding. Ebay weighed in my favor and provided a shipping slip for return.

-July 15th: Shipped item

-July 20th: The item showed back up at my address today marked 'Returned to Sender'. Looking at the tracking info it claims "Delivery Attempted - No Access to Delivery Location"

At this point the case is still open with the latest ebay status of "The item's on its way back.
You'll receive a refund when the item is delivered.". Looking up the seller's address is clear this isnt a legitimate location. Looks like a hotel lobby. Seller is obviously trying to pull a fraudulent transaction. But how do I proceed when the item i was trying to return instead comes back to me? I have no way of updating the ebay case. Calling ebay is useless as they have no CS presence. Do I wait and see what happens to this case?

From my knowledge a "Delivery Attempted" tracking status counts as delivered in ebay's eyes. So if either of you ask ebay to step in, the automated system should see that tracking and award you the refund. Someone chime in to confirm this.

FYI, this "Delivery Attempted" status works both ways. For instance if a buyer files an item not received... ebay will award the seller in this example.

You should be able to use the "call me" option to reach CS

https://www.ebay.com/help/buying/returns-refunds/returns-missing-items-refunds-buyers?id=4008&st=12&...

Scroll all the way down to the bottom of that page and click on the "Have us call you"

Tell them that there was an attempted delivery of the return and that you suspect a fraudulent return address was used by the seller.  Ask them to please close the return in your favor because you did everything you were supposed to do.

Since the seller provided the label, the seller is responsible for getting that return back to himself.  I think he's going to be surprised when he finds out his  return scam didn't work out has he planned.

When the eBay bot sees "Delivered" (but to Original Sender) in the tracking later today, you'll get the promised forced refund, as it does not check the zip code.
