One item damaged in shipping but order was combined. How can I cancel it?

The buyer combined items into one order.  All of the items were bubble wrapped and shipped together. I was notified tonight that one item was damaged during shipping, but the buyer is saying it was not as advertised.  It was sent via USPS retail ground with no insurance.

How can I cancel just the damaged item to refund the buyer’s purchase price and get my fees refunded?

If I understand your question, I don't think you are going to be able to do what you are thinking.  You didn't say if the buyer opened up a Money Back Guarantee (MBG) claim or just sent you a message ... so, I'll cover both to the best of my understanding:

  • If the buyer has just sent you a message, you can do a partial refund through PayPal for the order, but this will not refund any of your eBay fees.
  • If the buyer has opened up a MBG claim, then you can (a) tell the buyer to not ship the item back and (b) refund the item cost plus shipping costs paid by the buyer ... you'll see what amount that eBay is requiring in the screen where you are doing the refund (you have to reimburse shipping, but if you have a combined shipping rule then I don't know how this might be accommodated by a MBG claim).  In this scenario, you'll automatically receive credit back for eBay's final value fees.

Two quick notes on this:

  1. If the package is under a cubic foot, I think you are better off to ship Priority Mail ... cost is very close to the same.
  2. It is difficult to get insurance coverage for broken glass, which usually happens because of G-forces, and those are not covered.  To get coverage, you need to demonstrate the box was crushed/pierced and that the glass inside was double boxed and packaged correctly.
